Gyotaro and Ume’s Fate in Demon Slayer: What Would Happen If They Were Like Tanjiro and Nezuko

The Demon Slayer series has introduced a diverse array of antagonists throughout its storyline. While some characters are depicted as inherently evil, others are portrayed as victims of their circumstances. This narrative strategy is common in anime and manga, as creators aim to craft villains that resonate with viewers and readers on an emotional level.

Among the powerful Upper Moon 6 demons, Gyutaro and Daki were notably formidable, nearly killing the Sound Hashira alongside other demon hunters who confronted them. Initially despised by the audience, Gyutaro and Daki’s characters garnered sympathy as their backstories were revealed.

It is intriguing to consider how Gyutaro and Ume (Daki’s name as a human) could have led lives akin to Tanjiro and Nezuko if certain events had unfolded differently. Here’s an exploration of their potential alternate pathways.

Demon Slayer: The Potential Lives of Gyutaro and Ume as Tanjiro and Nezuko

Gyutaro faced disdain from the moment he was born. Lacking affection from his mother, he endured physical abuse and name-calling. Born in the Yoshiwara District, where physical appearance was paramount, Gyutaro suffered due to his lack of conventional attractiveness, resorting to eating rats and insects for survival.

His circumstances began to shift with the birth of his sister, Ume, who grew into one of the most celebrated Oirans in the district. Despite his frail appearance, Gyutaro possessed great strength and worked as a debt collector, often resorting to violence to enforce payment. Though his actions were brutal, they stemmed from a lifetime of hatred, and the siblings ultimately became demons seeking vengeance for the wrongs committed against Ume.

During an incident where Ume was attacked by a customer, she stabbed him in the eye. Being a Samurai, he retaliated, ultimately killing her when Gyutaro was absent. Consumed by rage, Gyutaro murdered the Samurai and sought the aid of Doma, the Upper Moon 2 demon, who promised immortality in exchange for consuming Muzan’s blood.

However, their fate might have redirected if a Hashira had intervened in the situation. Had a Hashira been present during the confrontation between Ume and her customer, it’s possible that a peaceful resolution could have occurred. Gyutaro’s evident strength and fighting skills could have captured the attention of a Hashira, leading to discussions with figures like Kagaya Ubuyashiki, potentially allowing Gyutaro to join the Demon Slayer Corps and pursue a life of honor and service.

Ume might have chosen to leave her life as an Oiran, joining her brother on missions that required support rather than direct combat. This potential for redemption mirrors Tanjiro Kamado’s own journey following his encounter with Giyu Tomioka.
