A hacker was dissatisfied with the functionality of the laundry machines in his building, thus he opted to circumvent them in order to obtain free laundry for life.
Despite CSC Serviceworks, a laundry management company, replacing all the machines in his building with new coin-operated or app-based ones, Michael Orlitzky remained unfazed. He had previously experienced issues with the card reader machines malfunctioning and the recharge machine not accepting dollar bills.
CSC decided to replace the machines a week earlier than scheduled, rendering any cash loaded on his or others’ laundry cards worthless. Fueled by anger, Orlitzky made the decision to use the laundry services for free.
According to Orlitzky’s personal website, he discovered several ways to bypass the CSC machines, allowing him to do his laundry for free. In an email to 404 Media, he shared his findings and mentioned that he had successfully bypassed three different models of CSC-branded Speed Queen machines provided by Alliance Laundry Systems.
Orlitzky began by accessing the service panels of the machines. Opening the dryers’ panels was a simple task, as they were held in place by two screws. However, for the washers, he took advantage of Alliance’s online parts store and purchased a $6 “Alliance washer-dryer key”that could unlock the service panel. Additionally, he recommended utilizing tubular lockpickers to complete the task.
Once inside the service panel, he deliberately connected the red and black wires on the coin-drop mechanism to bypass payment and gain access to free laundry. When it came to the dryers, Orlitzky took precautions to avoid electrocution by using a voltage tester and carefully exposing the wires with a pocket knife.
Orlitzky shared his story of receiving free laundry on his website on June 2, 2023. Over a year has passed and he still hasn’t received any communication from CSC, indicating that he has been enjoying free laundry for more than a year.
