Discontent arose among teachers who disapprove of students using such phrases in academic environments. One educator took to the r/teachers subreddit to express frustration in a post titled, ‘I’m prepared to file sexual harassment charges, and so should you.’
The anonymous teacher recounted an incident involving a 9th-grade male student who entered their classroom and boldly declared, ‘hawk tuah, spit on that thang.’
“The student faced a day of in-school suspension and was supposed to write an apology letter, which he ‘lost’ and ultimately had to apologize in person,” the teacher explained. “Thus, there were essentially no repercussions. I plan to contact my union representative, and if this occurs again, I will report it to the authorities. I’ve had enough.”
The teacher elaborated that this particular student had previously made inappropriate comments to female classmates, indicating that his use of ‘hawk tuah’ represented a worsening of his misconduct.
The post quickly gained traction on social media and eventually reached Twitter/X, where it caught the attention of Haliey Welch.
