On September 2, TV Chosun released an exclusive report stating that Shin, a woman in her 50s and the mother of actress Han So-hee, had been arrested for allegedly organizing and operating illegal gambling activities.
According to the report, Shin has been accused of running 12 gambling establishments in various cities including Ulsan and Wonju, using business operators as her proxies, since 2021 until the end of last month.
Shin was the primary distributor of a gambling site that was accessed by customers at these establishments. They utilized the site to buy game money and participate in games such as baccarat.
It has been reported that Shin has a criminal record, including previous charges of fraud, and had previously received a fine for a similar offense.
In 2019, Shin borrowed 40 million KRW (approx. 29,865 USD) from Mr. A, an acquaintance, with her daughter Han So-hee as a co-guarantor. When Shin was unable to repay the debt, Mr. A took legal action and filed a civil lawsuit against Han So-hee, seeking repayment of the initial 40 million KRW plus accrued interest for the delayed payment.
During that period, Han So-hee clarified that her grandmother had raised her after her parents’ divorce when she was five years old. She had minimal interaction with her mother and only discovered the debt when she turned 20. Despite already paying off her mother’s debts prior to her debut, her name was still being misused for additional debts.
Ultimately, the Ulsan District Court concluded in both the initial and subsequent trials that the incident was not connected to Han So-hee.
