Han So-hee’s Decision for a Same-Sex Kiss in Her Queer Melodrama “Heavy Snow”

On October 11, a media event and press screening for “Heavy Snow”was held in Seoul, featuring the attendance of director Yoon Soo-ik and actress Han Hae-in, who engaged with the media.

The narrative of “Heavy Snow”revolves around the winter romance between Seol-i (played by Han So-hee), a former teenage celebrity, and Su-an (portrayed by Han Hae-in), an up-and-coming actress. As they confront personal challenges rooted in honesty, the duo attempts to rebuild their bond. This film marks the debut of Han So-hee on the screen and her initial foray into queer romance, where she depicts Seol-i as a seemingly self-assured figure wrestling with her inner fears, while ultimately expressing genuine affection for Su-an.

Despite the anticipation, Han So-hee was unable to attend the event, which left some attendees feeling disappointed.

The filming of “Heavy Snow”started back in 2019, incorporating content from the early phase of Han So-hee’s acting career, which began in 2017. Director Yoon shared insights: “Although ‘Heavy Snow’ commenced five years ago, we consistently engaged in reshoots and additional filming, even up until a month before its release. This film has been a continuous labor of love, not just something we put on the shelf. I feel both excitement and nervousness as it approaches its unveiling.”

When discussing the casting choice of Han So-hee, Director Yoon commented, “I discovered Han So-hee’s talent through her Instagram, and her beauty struck me immediately. There was an intriguing resistance in her gaze, which made her compelling. Thus, I extended an offer for the role without going through the audition process.”

On the topic of the film’s queer romance aspect, Director Yoon noted, “Han So-hee didn’t seem to view the queer theme as essential from the outset, and we never really delved into that matter. Her focus was primarily on the narrative’s tone and her character Seol-i.”
