Han So-hee’s Mother Sentenced for Illegal Gambling Operations
On December 25, the Chuncheon District Court’s Wonju branch delivered a suspended sentence of one year in prison to Han So-hee‘s mother, Ms. Shin. Additionally, she was ordered to complete 120 hours of community service after being convicted for operating illegal gambling dens.
Despite a previous conviction in 2021 for similar crimes, Ms. Shin continued her unlawful activities, managing seven gambling establishments from January 2022 until August 2023 across various cities, including Wonju, Ulsan, and Gyeongju. These operations primarily facilitated online gambling games such as baccarat, often in partnership with local gaming operators.
The court acknowledged Ms. Shin’s substantial financial profits derived from these gambling dens but took into account her lack of prior offenses and time spent in pretrial detention when deciding on the suspended sentence. However, the prosecution has expressed discontent with this ruling, arguing that the sentence is insufficient given the severity of the crimes.
This incident marks yet another controversy in Ms. Shin’s life. Back in 2020, she faced allegations of misappropriating funds from a private savings group, which resulted in a significant debt scandal. Han So-hee has previously commented on her challenging upbringing, stating, “My parents divorced when I was five, and I was raised by my grandmother. As her child, I repaid her debts to the best of my ability before debuting.” Furthermore, in 2021, Ms. Shin was fined 5 million won after violating the Game Industry Promotion Act.
In 2022, Ms. Shin was also involved in a lawsuit for failing to reimburse an 85 million won loan she had taken out in 2018, using a bank account belonging to Han So-hee without her consent.
In response to the ongoing situation, Han So-hee’s agency, 9ato Entertainment, expressed their sorrow regarding the events, clarifying that this legal issue is personal and has no connection to the actress, who first learned of the situation through media outlets.
