Hans Niemann – strict anti-cheating measures after win streak at Turkish chess event

Hans Niemann’s performance at the 2024 Turkish League event has been impressive, but the organizers have recently introduced more stringent anti-cheating measures that apply to all players during the tournament.

Despite facing cheating allegations from top player Magnus Carlsen in 2022, Niemann remains a controversial figure in the chess world.

Despite online conflicts with other players and Elon Musk, the American player has remained a prominent figure, steadily climbing the international chess rankings by dominating his opponents.

The latest controversy surrounding Niemann revolves around his involvement in the Türkiye İş Bankası 100th Anniversary Super League. Currently, the American has earned 9.5/13 points in the team event, with a record of seven wins, one loss, and five draws.

Following his victory over Chinese Grandmaster Yu Yangyi on July 21, the Turkish Chess Federation, the tournament organizer, enforced anti-cheating protocols for Niemann’s upcoming matches, as stated by a commentator on the broadcast found at https://www.youtube.com/clip/UgkxDX7OGI1hFMzv6auJ05dA0hj9K__M_ZMZ.

The quoted segment of the stream occurs approximately 2 hours and 16 seconds into the broadcast.

According to IM Kamal Aghasiyev, the Turkish Chess Federation is implementing anti-cheating measures, which is the reason why Hans Niemann’s board is not translating as of July 24.

Aghasiyev later explained that there are anti-cheating measures in place for multiple players.

Ever since his victory over Yangyi, Niemann’s matches have not been broadcasted through the venue’s video feed or featured on the analysis board by the commentator. They have also been delayed on platforms like Chess.com, where only the moves on the board are displayed.

The American and his team were still present and visible on camera, but the view of his board was obstructed. The event involves six-player teams competing simultaneously, with only a select few boards from each team being broadcasted via the event’s live feed.

The discovery of the alteration in the broadcast’s portrayal of Niemann was initially noticed on Reddit.

At the time of writing, there have been no formal accusations made by the Turkish Chess Federation against Niemann. Additionally, the organization has not shared any information on social media regarding their anti-cheating measures.

Niemann has not yet made any statements regarding the situation at the time of writing.
