Indeed, after nearly three decades, a sequel to one of the top Adam Sandler films is in the works. Happy Gilmore 2 has officially been given the greenlight, as Netflix continues to collaborate with the comedic actor to produce this highly-anticipated movie.

For a while now, Sandler has expressed his desire to expand on the amazing sports film with a new narrative, and now he (along with fans) can truly start to feel enthusiastic.

Following the confirmation of Happy Gilmore 2, here is the current information we have and some potential plot points we would love to see included in the film.

Is there a release date for Happy Gilmore 2?

At this time, a release date for Happy Gilmore 2 has not been announced.

According to an update from Production Weekly, it has been confirmed that the movie officially began production during the week of July 11. With this news, the tee time is steadily approaching!

During an interview on Dan Patrick’s show, Sandler officially announced that the movie is in production with writer Tim Herlihy. Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the original film, shared that he has received the script and praised it as “awesome.”

Netflix has already confirmed that Happy Gilmore 2 will be available on their streaming service, although the exact release date is still unknown. Based on the fact that the script may require some revisions and considering the production process, our estimate for the film’s release would be 2026.

Happy Gilmore 2: Plot Summary

At the moment, no official plot details have been released for Happy Gilmore 2 as it is still in its initial stages of development.

Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore
Universal

The initial film concluded on a positive note, with all major plot points resolved. Happy successfully won the Tour Championship and defeated Shooter, found love, and rescued his grandmother’s house.

It is highly probable that Happy and Shooter will have another encounter in some form. In fact, followers of the original film have their own speculations regarding this, which revolve around the next generation of the Gilmore family.

On Reddit, there was speculation that it would be enjoyable to witness Gilmore’s daughter (played by Sandler’s real-life daughter) pursue a career as a professional golfer on the LPGA Tour, with Shooter’s daughter as her main competitor.

What would make the situation even more amusing is if Gilmore’s daughter faced difficulties with golf and decided to try her hand at hockey instead. As luck would have it, she inherited her father’s natural talent and became a sensation in the sport. The twist is, Shooter McGavin had actually raised his daughter to play hockey instead of golf, only to be surpassed once again by a member of the Gilmore family.

It is uncertain if the plot will revolve solely around Sandler’s character or if he will attempt to pass the baton to a younger cast.

Cast of Happy Gilmore 2

The sole individual we can confirm will appear in the cast is Adam Sandler portraying the titular character.

Julie Bowen and Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore
Universal

While Sandler has not officially announced the return of any original cast members for the sequel, the fact that Christopher McDonald has received the script implies that he will reprise his role as Shooter McGavin.

It is currently uncertain if other actors, like Julie Bowen, will return for Happy Gilmore 2. In the first film, Bowen portrayed Virginia, the tour’s public relations agent who develops a romantic relationship with Happy. It is possible that her character could reappear in the sequel as Happy’s wife (or ex-wife, adding more drama).

Carl Weathers, Richard Kiel, and Bob Barker, who all played significant roles in the film, have passed away. Weathers portrayed Derick “Chubbs” Peterson, a professional golfer who lost his hand to an alligator and mentored Happy. Kiel, on the other hand, played Mr. Larson, Happy’s former co-worker.

Fans can only hope that Sandler will honor the memory of Frances Bay, who portrayed Happy’s beloved grandmother. The actress passed away in 2011 at the age of 92.

Paige Spiranac, a well-known professional golfer, has been strongly suggested for a role in the movie. Fans have been urging for her to be included, and she herself hinted that she is eager to be a part of it.

Is there a trailer?

Happy Gilmore 2 does not have an official trailer.

Unfortunately, it is still too early in the development process for fans to catch a glimpse of the sequel.
