Hazbin Hotel Creator Responds to Antisemitism Allegations

The individual responsible for creating Hazbin Hotel has responded to accusations of antisemitism surrounding a specific character, urging fans to “move on.”

Vivienne Medrano is the creative mastermind behind Hazbin Hotel and its lively and captivating cast of characters. Viewers have become enamored with beloved personalities such as Vaggie, Lucifer, and Angel. The animated show boasts a diverse and endearing roster of characters.

Despite its popularity, the series sparked controversy over allegations that the character Mimzy perpetuates Jewish stereotypes, leading some to view her as an offensive and antisemitic portrayal.

Despite numerous attempts by fans to disprove these allegations, Medrano has ultimately revealed the truth about Mimzy’s character in order to put an end to the backlash once and for all.

Ayy Lmao, a popular YouTuber, recently posted a video on YouTube addressing the recent controversy and its absurdity. According to the allegations, Mimzy’s appearance, particularly her nose and resemblance to old caricatures, perpetuated Jewish stereotypes, leading to a flood of antisemitic remarks on social media.

A social media user pointed out, “The resemblance between Mimzy and traditional anti-Semitic depictions is striking. And before anyone argues that the man is not a caricature, take note of the edited ‘York’ in New York, which has been changed to ‘New Jerusalem’.”

Medrano shared her thoughts on the topic of Mimzy’s identity in response to clear up any misunderstandings. She clarified that Mimzy is not a Jewish character, but rather a flapper girl who was loosely inspired by a chicken, hence her tiny beaky nose. Medrano expressed discomfort with the fact that some people have labeled Mimzy as Jewish, and she hopes that the issue can be put to rest now.

In the “Dad Beat Dad”episode, Mimzy is a club owner and a minor character. Her appearance and mannerisms align with Medrano’s claim that she is a flapper girl from the 1920s, as evidenced by her bob-style haircut, pin flapper dress, and feathered headband. Additionally, she is a jazz singer.

The tweet that Medrano responded to also made a comparison between Mimzy and a photograph of real-life flapper women. The fan stated, “She’s essentially just a flapper, I don’t understand why people are so adamant about the Jewish stereotype.”

One fan took a stand by responding, “Even though Mimzy displays antisemitic stereotypes and fits the stereotype of a Jewish American Princess, she is not portrayed as a Jewish character as she is based off of a chicken. Flappers, which were popularized by and often portrayed as Jewish, were a significant part of the 1920s culture. That being said, what justification do you have for your criticism of Rosie?”

Some other followers of the show have been fixated on the creator’s announcement that Mimzy possesses characteristics of a chicken.

“Wait, we’re moving on already? No way, we need to have a whole new discussion about this. Mimzy is inspired by a chicken? That’s something I never would have guessed. That’s insane! Just to clarify, I have no negative feelings towards this and I actually love it,”said a fan.

Currently, Season 2 of Hazbin Hotel is in the works. In the meantime, you can also watch similar shows in succession to help pass the time.
