On December 30th, a poignant memorial altar was established at the Muan Sports Complex in Muan, South Jeolla, honoring the 179 victims of the recent Jeju Air plane crash. This solemn site serves as a place for bereaved families and the public to pay respects to those who tragically lost their lives.

In attendance were notable figures such as Acting President Choi Sang-mok and National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik, who expressed their condolences and laid wreaths at the memorial altar, signifying their solidarity with the grieving families.

Grief enveloped the scene as many visitors broke down upon seeing the individual memorial plaques, which were arranged in two full lines bearing the names of each victim. A total of 179 plaques were displayed, allowing friends and family members to lay flowers and reflect on the lives lost.

Beyond the memorial altar in Muan, the Korean government has facilitated additional memorial sites at the crash location and across 17 cities nationwide. A national mourning period, lasting seven days from December 29th to January 4th, has been declared, during which many citizens have donned memorial ribbons to honor the victims.

Currently, efforts are ongoing to identify and recover the remains of several victims, as many families are still waiting for closure. Reports indicate that most of the deceased had recently returned from vacationing in Thailand, with numerous families traveling in groups of four to six.

The Korean authorities are committed to promptly addressing the aftermath of this heart-wrenching incident, which has deeply affected the nation. The airplane crash marks one of South Korea’s most devastating aviation disasters in recent history.
