If you’re excited to see Helaena riding Dreamfyre in the finale of Season 2 of House of the Dragon, just be aware that your expectations may need to be tempered.
Despite being in its second season, there has been no shortage of dragon battles in the show. Viewers have witnessed intense clashes such as the one between Rhaenys and Meleys against Aemond and Vhagar at Rook’s Rest, Baela’s pursuit of Criston Cole on Moondancer, and the acquisition of Vermithor and Silverwing by Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White in Episode 7.
Despite being a prominent feature in the show, there’s one dragon that has been rarely seen since its debut: Dreamfyre, the dragon of Helaena Targaryen.
While we cannot reveal the specific reasons, it is worth noting that the book House of the Dragon is the source material for the show. However, the Season 2 Episode 8 trailer hinted at the potential for Helaena to finally ride her dragon.
“In the trailer, Aemond informs Helaena that there are new riders rising up against them. He requests her assistance in flying with Dreamfyre in the upcoming battle.”
One might assume that this implies Helaena will engage in a battle against the Black dragons in the finale. However, this never occurs in the book (no spoilers), and another scene in the trailer suggests that someone will intervene to prevent Aemond from compelling Helaena to fight.
The individual in question is Alicent. She confronts Aemond, stating, “You desire to rule the Seven Kingdoms, yet you bring only destruction and death.”Behind her, Helaena appears visibly anxious. This scene appears earlier in the trailer, but it will likely occur later in the actual episode.

“While I understand everyone’s excitement for Helaena riding Dreamfyre, it’s possible that Mama Alicent will intervene and put a stop to it,”one fan noted.
“According to one person’s speculation, he was attempting to persuade her to let someone else take ownership of Dreamfyre, but he became too insistent and Alicent intervened.”
“As predicted by a third person, the next scene will show Helena breaking down at his request and Alicent yelling at Aemond while he looks visibly angry. Dreamfyre is not present in this scene.”
Rest assured, however, as the Season 2 finale will also feature the introduction of another dragon: Tessarion, known as the “Blue Queen”and ridden by Daeron Targaryen.
