The developers of Helldivers 2 are implementing a multitude of alterations to their arsenal, but this does not mean that the downgraded designs will be useless. On the contrary, this could present an ideal chance for immersive worldbuilding.
In Helldivers 2, players have a wide selection of more than 50 weapons to choose from, each undergoing regular adjustments in the form of nerfs and buffs to ensure they are effective in the fight for liberty. While many guns have undergone significant changes since the game’s release, there is still a way to pay homage to their previous versions while also utilizing potential for worldbuilding.
According to players’ suggestions, Super Earth (or Arrowhead Studios) could distribute the older weapons across various planets. This would allow players to encounter these weapons during missions, but they could either be the weaker, original versions or the stronger ones that were nerfed.
The potential for worldbuilding is immense, as it could highlight Super Earth’s practice of disposing of their faulty weapons on other planets. Alternatively, these weapons may have been strategically placed at significant landmarks. It is also possible that a weapons research facility was destroyed due to its unethical creations, as Super Earth discovered that the weapons were malfunctioning and causing harm to players with shields. Another possibility is that the enemy destroyed the facility, resulting in the loss of their advanced weapon designs.
Implementing this feature of picking up weapons could definitely add an exciting twist to the gameplay. Not knowing if the weapon you grab will be overpowered or underwhelming would definitely keep players on their toes. Of course, there may be some clutter initially, but with proper balancing by Arrowhead, this could truly enhance an already thrilling game.
It should be noted that incorporating this feature into a game, although enjoyable, could pose a significant challenge for Arrowhead. This would involve creating unique codes for every version of a weapon, but there is always a chance it could be done.
