Helldivers 2 Developer Responds to Requests for Larger Squad Sizes

The developer of Helldivers 2 has clarified why they may not be able to implement requests for larger squad sizes in the game’s current state.

Like many other online cooperative games, Helldivers 2 allows players to form squads of up to four members. The four-player limit is ideal for battling the formidable enemies that Divers encounter in their mission to protect Super Earth.

It can be risky to attempt more challenging tasks with only one or two players, and even groups of three may not fare much better.

Naturally, there has been speculation among players about whether developer Arrowhead would ever expand the maximum number of players for a single mission beyond four. However, Community Manager Thomas ‘Twinbeard’ Petersson expressed skepticism about the possibility of including more than four people in future squads.

In a Discord chat (via PCGamesN), Twinbeard responded to questions about the possibility of larger squad sizes in Helldivers 2 by stating “I don’t know”. The developer acknowledged that this change would require a significant amount of effort, meaning that even if squad sizes are increased, it will not be happening in the near future.

In his complete statement, he states: “I am unsure, but I am aware that pursuing this path would involve a significant amount of effort. If it does become a possibility (which I am uncertain about), it would not be in the near future.”

Despite the chaos that already exists in a four-player game of Helldivers 2, adding more users to the mix will only amplify the intensity. With a handful of Divers calling in Orbital strikes, planting turrets, and frantically shooting at any moving target, the game’s friendly fire feature becomes even more crucial to consider.

If Arrowhead decides to increase the size of squads, the shooter’s already delicate balance will require even further adjustments.
