Hit anime opening was the “most listened to song” in Japan for 2023

“In 2023, Oshi No Ko emerged as one of the most popular anime series, with its opening ranking at the top of a major chart in Japan for the entire fiscal year.”

Oshi No Ko, released in 2023, is considered one of the top anime productions of the year. Through its use of supernatural elements, the series explores the high-pressure world of the idol industry, following the story of two individuals who are reincarnated as twin popstars. The opening theme, titled ‘Idol’ and performed by J-pop duo Yoasobi, perfectly captures the dramatic and infectious energy of the series.

The song’s catchiness led to it being the most streamed song in Japan for the year 2023. The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) recently released their charts and data for the year, and according to NHK’s report, ‘Idol’ was the top single.

According to the song’s description, the majority of listens, about 70%, were from subscription services like Spotify. Additionally, there was also a significant amount of interactive viewing through karaoke and online videos. These figures represent the global audience, as the song ‘Idol’ steadily rose on the Billboard Global Top 10 chart starting in May 2023, ultimately reaching its peak at number seven.

Over the past few years, Yoasobi has experienced numerous new encounters and developments in our endeavors, yet I am convinced that this particular song has been the driving force behind our progress,”stated Ayase, one half of the duo. “I am overjoyed that the song has resonated with so many individuals. It is the ultimate satisfaction for a composer.”

The highly anticipated second season of Oshi No Ko is scheduled to debut in July 2024. With the first season’s resounding success, this anime is expected to be one of the biggest releases of the year. It is likely that ‘Idol’ will once again be used as the opening theme, as it is a perfect fit for the show.
