Pinocchio: Unstrung is the latest addition to The Twisted Childhood Universe, also known as the “Poohniverse”. However, another movie has already beaten it to the punch.
In recent years, there has been a trend of horror movies featuring beloved childhood characters, which reached its peak of absurdity with the release of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey in 2023.
Despite receiving critical backlash, the film was a major box office hit, leading to the development of an entire cinematic universe centered around beloved characters. As a result, Pinocchio, Bambi, and Peter Pan are all slated to join the Twisted Childhood Universe in the near future.
Despite facing accusations of imitating the marketing of another iconic horror doll, Pinocchio: Unstrung is also prompting movie enthusiasts to recall a cheesy horror film from the ’90s that also featured a puppet.

Before the release of Pinocchio: Unstrung, there was another movie called Pinocchio’s Revenge. It premiered straight-to-video in 1996 and offered a darker version of the well-known character.
The plot of the film centers on a lawyer who is tasked with defending a convicted child murderer. After discovering an apparently innocent wooden puppet buried with a body, she brings it home. However, her daughter becomes attached to the doll and they decide to keep it. Little do they know, the Pinocchio puppet has a sinister and violent mind of its own.
Pinocchio’s Revenge was a flop with critics
If the phrase “straight-to-video”causes concern, it is understandable. The film received negative reviews from both critics and audiences, and currently holds a low rating of 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.
When the Pinocchio: Unstrung poster was unveiled on August 23, an X user shared their thoughts, stating “I wonder if this upcoming horror movie can live up to the standards set by Pinocchio’s Revenge.”
As someone else noted: “Wait, didn’t they already make a Pinocchio horror movie in ’96?”
On Reddit, a user shared: “Whenever my cousin and I visited Suncoast, we would always check out the horror movie section. This particular title and cover caught our attention and we were eager to watch it.”
Undoubtedly, Pinocchio’s Revenge could function more as a satirical viewing experience rather than a true horror masterpiece.
According to a user’s review, this movie is ideal for a laid-back evening. The person recalls their stepfather purchasing VHS tapes from a certain individual, and this movie being one of them. As a child, they would frequently watch it. However, even now, it still doesn’t make any sense. Another user also chimed in, describing the movie as extremely bizarre.
Conversely, some individuals have more positive recollections of the horror films from the 1990s. As evidenced by comments such as, “This film may have been overlooked, but it is a well-crafted psychological horror. And that puppet is truly unsettling,”and “I have vivid memories of watching this at 10 years old and being terrified. I should definitely give it another watch!”
“Currently, Pinocchio’s Revenge cannot be streamed on any services, but it is available to rent for $3.99 on Apple TV+.”
