The second season of House of the Dragon has come to an end, and the finale took advantage of the opportunity to incorporate one of George R.R. Martin’s most iconic lines.
Throughout Season 2, Daemon has primarily resided in Harrenhal, causing many to question his loyalty to Rhaenyra. However, in Episode 8, he solidified his commitment to his queen and assembled an army in her name, surprising everyone with the three unexpected words he spoke.
When Rhaenyra arrived at Harrenhal to confront him, Daemon disclosed the details of his vision, warning her of the imminent trouble ahead. In particular, he uttered the words: “Winter is coming.”
This specific phrase was widely promoted in the original marketing for Game of Thrones, making it a familiar one for any fan of the show. It served as a preview of what was to come in the fantasy realm, although the outcome may not have lived up to expectations.

Including this dialogue in the prequel series may have initially been seen as a clever tactic to gain nostalgic approval from House of the Dragon viewers, but it appears to have had the opposite effect.
Many people are appalled by the fact that the show attempted to incorporate one of Game of Thrones’ most famous lines. This serves as a reminder that the original series had a disappointing conclusion.
Upon witnessing Dany and the Night King’s army, Daemon exclaimed “winter is coming”, only for Bran Stark to ultimately claim the throne. All of this, just for Jon Snow’s true identity as a Targaryen to hold no significance… I am devastated by what has been taken away from us, as expressed by one X user on their tweet (link).
“With all due respect, why was he made to say that,”commented another user on a post.
One person commented, “The writers are just trying to manipulate our emotions with nostalgia for an ending that we all despised. It’s frustrating.”
Another user stated that the phrase was completely unrelated to the series.
As winter approaches, so does the highly anticipated Season 3 of House of the Dragon.
