House of the Dragon Episode 7: Hidden George RR Martin Cameo Revealed

Despite the intense scenes of dragons wreaking havoc and the satisfying downfall of Daemon, it’s possible that some House of the Dragon viewers may have overlooked one of the most enjoyable cameos of Season 2.

Although House of the Dragon is not typically known for having many cameos, the second season has featured appearances from actors such as Milly Alcock and Paddy Considine. This has created opportunities for surprise appearances in the show. In fact, in Episode 7, viewers can catch a glimpse of author George R.R. Martin himself.

As Oscar Tully cleverly knocks Daemon off his pedestal by publicly insulting him in front of the Riverlords, the Weirwood tree of Harrenhal can be spotted in the background.

Upon the wood, there is a face skillfully carved, unmistakably belonging to Martin.

Despite not being an exact replica, the inclusion of those characteristics unmistakably serves as a homage to the writer of the source material for House of the Dragon.

In the featurette for the episode, production designer Jim Clay revealed that the concept behind the scene was a tribute, as requested by Ryan Condal. The intention was for the object to gradually blend into the tree’s bark.

Afterwards in the video, Martin catches sight of the tree and expresses his appreciation to the team, saying, “That’s really cool guys. Thank you.”

Martin was initially set to portray a Pentoshi nobleman in the unaired pilot episode of Game of Thrones. However, due to significant reshoots, this role was ultimately cut.

Therefore, the tree serves as the closest representation of the author within the in-universe world for House of the Dragon viewers… at least for the time being.

However, fans are not exactly rejoicing over this piece of trivia. Instead, they are taking advantage of it to revisit a joke that has been around since the ancient Weirwood tree.

One X user wrote that he should leave the tree and complete Winds of Winter.

One commenter pointed out: “This is the reason for why he hasn’t completed Winds of Winter. He’s stuck.”

A third commenter joked that “GRRM will never finish Winds of Winter, he’ll just turn into a tree.”Another suggested humorously that the tree should be cut down to make the paper for the book as soon as possible.
