The highly-anticipated moment for fans in the first episode of House of the Dragon’s new season has been revealed, with some keen-eyed viewers noticing a previous detail that sheds light on the situation.
Fans of House of the Dragon eagerly anticipated the opening episode of Season 2, which promised to deliver the deadly pairing of Blood and Cheese. Daemon had enlisted their services to carry out the assassination of Aemond within the walls of the Red Keep. However, the duo took the “son for a son”instruction quite literally once they arrived at their target.
Despite her objections, Helaena is forced to witness the execution of her son Jaehaerys, who was next in line to inherit the Iron Throne. It was a gruesome sight, regardless of one’s opinion on the alterations made to the book’s portrayal of the event.
However, keen viewers have discovered a foreboding clue that foreshadowed this event. In an early scene, Aegon enters the nursery in search of Jaehaerys. Helaena cautions him about the rodents – her prophetic instincts later proving to be accurate – while simultaneously sewing the very fabric that would eventually be used for Jaehaerys’ funeral shroud.

One X user pointed out, “Isn’t it interesting how her dreamers’ intuition led her to unknowingly sew Jaehaerys’ funeral shroud? This seems logical, especially since she also mentions her irrational fear of ‘rats’ in the same scene. She’s stuck in a situation without even realizing it.”
Helaena’s words are indeed unsettling, but even more unsettling is the fact that she is already preparing for her child’s demise. “She may not understand why, but she feels compelled to do so,”another commenter pointed out.
“Wow, I didn’t even realize that was a shroud… Perhaps they are not completely messing up this show,”another person came to understand.
The mention of the rats by Helaena caught the attention of others, who also noticed another distressing detail. As she spoke, Helaena’s gaze fell upon her son’s bed, where he would later be found when Blood and Cheese entered the room and killed him. This was not the first time Helaena’s premonitions had come true, but it was undoubtedly the most heart-wrenching.
“One user pointed out that the woman looked at her son’s bed after mentioning ‘the rats’.”
According to another user, Helaena is not only sewing the shroud, but also glances at Jahaerys’s crib right after mentioning rats. The distinction between reality and dreams is blurred for her, and she often dissociates when she realizes that her premonitions are not just nightmares, but visions of the future. This user praises the writing for its brilliance.
Despite Helaena’s words potentially serving as a warning, they are largely ignored by those around her. Though the Blood and Cheese attack is distressing to witness, it fails to satisfy some fans. In the book, the event is much more harrowing as Helaena is forced to make a heart-wrenching decision between her two sons. Even her response, characterized by screams of terror, is portrayed with greater nuance in the show.
Despite this, it is still a gruesome event, fitting in with the violent nature of George R.R. Martin’s fictional universe.
