House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 7: Team Black and the New Dragonriders – Explained Ending

A request has been made to change the title of Episode 7 to the Battle of the Bastards.

The penultimate episode of House of the Dragon Season 2 is a delightful surprise for both television fans and book readers, as it contains numerous theories that are worth analyzing.

During season 2, episode 5, Rhaenyra and Jaecaerys came up with a strategy to increase the number of Dragonriders by enabling those with Valyrian heritage to take control of the unclaimed dragons on Dragonstone.

During episode 7, Dragonstone welcomed new members of the House of the Dragon, such as Hugh and Ulf, who were given the opportunity to change their destinies through the Sowing of the Seeds ceremony. The outcome was tumultuous, chaotic, and bewildering, leaving many unresolved mysteries by the episode’s conclusion.

1. Why did Aemond turn Vhagar away from Dragonstone?

Aemond quickly understands the potential risks that await him should he enter Dragonstone.

In the final scene, Aemond’s small council meeting is disrupted by the sighting of a dragon flying over King’s Landing.

As a result, the streets are filled with chaos as individuals run in a state of pure panic, their voices raised in screams.

As Aemond spots a dragon he does not recognize, he wastes no time in searching for Vhagar, his own dragon who is still recuperating from the Battle of Rook’s Rest.

Aemond rides Vhagar and chases after the unknown dragon, which Ulf is also riding. He continues his pursuit over Blackwater Bay, but stops just before reaching Dragonstone. He then orders Vhagar to turn back and retreat.

Despite his initial pursuit to gather information, Aemond was puzzled as he did not recognize either the dragon or its rider. However, upon realizing that the Blacks had at least three more dragons close by – Syrax, Vermax, and Moondancer – he quickly backed off.

Despite being the largest dragon in House of the Dragon, Vhagar is not invincible and Aemond is aware that entering a fight with the Blacks would not be wise. In essence, the Blacks sent a warning to inform Aemond of their impending attack.

Who does Ulf claim and ride?

Ulf fled from Vermithor only to end up in the clutches of Silverwing!

During the Sowing of the Seeds, the mighty dragon Vermithor becomes furious and begins igniting the many dragon seeds. Amidst the chaos, Ulf is thrust into the depths of Dragonstone’s caves, but he swiftly navigates through the tunnels in an attempt to find a way out and escape the turmoil.

Despite feeling secure after emerging into the light of day, Ulf unknowingly stumbles into the den of another dragon, Silverwing. Despite accidentally stepping on one of her eggs, the massive gray dragon immediately takes a liking to Ulf and he boldly declares her as his own.

Despite Vermithor being the only dragon currently resting on Dragonstone, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen had previously ridden Vermithor while Queen Alysanne had ridden Silverwing. However, Silverwing had been without a rider for many years.

Silverwing’s fondness for Ulf can be attributed to its gentle nature, which it is known for.

While she may not be known for her prowess in battle, she possesses a formidable size and age that make her a potential danger. Additionally, Vermithor and Silverwing share a special bond similar to their former king and queen riders.

Why did Vermithor choose Hugh?

“It is true that I never knew my father.”

Despite Hugh’s confidence in his mother, he still decides to take his chances and ride to Vermithor.

Despite eliminating 90% of those who attempted to claim her, Vermitor’s actions only led to chaos.

Known as the Bronze Fury, Vermithor is among the most formidable and colossal dragons in Game of Thrones. This fearsome creature was famously tamed and ridden by King Jaehaerys, who is widely recognized as one of the most remarkable Targaryen rulers. Under his reign, the realm enjoyed the longest stretch of tranquility in its history.

Despite facing brief conflicts and constantly traveling throughout the Seven Kingdoms, including the North and the Wall, Vermithor was able to grow even stronger. As such, it was only fitting that the dragon chose a rider who embodied strength and courage.

Despite calling out to the dragon and accepting his fate, Hugh also manages to save another dragonseed. Vermithor admires Hugh’s courage and bravery.

Strong dragons typically seek riders who will wholeheartedly accept them, and Vermithor’s former rider happens to be one of the most esteemed individuals to have ever graced the Seven Kingdoms.

The dragon, during the crucial moment, notices Hugh’s strength and sets a high bar for him.

4. How many dragons does House Black currently possess?

Rhaenerya’s presence in this game is now official, and her subtle smirk serves as proof.

Following season 2, episode 7, it seems that luck is in favor of Rhaenyra, as she has successfully gathered a formidable group of Dragonriders. The Greens are left with only Vhagar, as Aegon and Sunfyre are currently recuperating.

Currently, Team Black consists of the following dragons and riders. Despite Daemon’s absence as he raises his army, he remains a valuable asset to Rhaenyra and her cause.

  • Rhaenyra / Syrax
  • Daemon / Caraxes
  • Baela / Moondancer
  • Jacaerys / Vermax
  • Erik Kain / Rhaelyx (yes, I’m on Team Black despite my Alicent crush!)
  • Hugh Hammer / Vermithor
  • Ulf the White / Silverwing
  • Adam of Hull / Seasmoke

The Blacks now have a total of seven dragons prepared for battle with the addition of three new Dragonriders, while the Greens are left with only one dragon.

I hope you all have a wonderful Black Fans Day!

5. Where is Daeron Targaryen? Is he a Dragon Rider?

In addition to Aegon II, Aemond, and Helaena, Alicent Hightower and King Viserys I Targaryen also had another son, Daeron Targaryen. Although he has been mentioned throughout season 2 of House of the Dragon, Daeron has yet to appear onscreen.

Based on the discussion, it was revealed that he was brought up in Oldtown, the stronghold of House Hightower, apart from his siblings. In episode 7, it is highlighted that he is not only a dragonrider, but also has a dragon named Tessarion.

Despite adding one more dragon to the seven already held by the Blacks, the impact will likely be insignificant, particularly due to Tessarion’s lack of experience and youth. When it is reported that Tessarion has just taken flight, it suggests that Daeron will likely reappear at the beginning of season 3 of House of the Dragon, indicating that the Greens have not been completely defeated.

Despite the upcoming finale of season 2, the war is far from over as the Hightower army is still on their way.

6. Conversation between Alyn of Hull and Lord Corlys

“I must admit, I was not well-informed about your mother’s background.”

During his conversation with Alyn of Hull about his brother’s new role as a dragon rider, Lord Corlys may have addressed the bastard rumors for the first time in the show. This seems to come as a surprise to Alyn.

He is aware that eventually, individuals will discover their true parentage as the illegitimate children of Lord Corlys Velaryon.

Adam of Hull is filled with anticipation at the thought of his neglectful father, Corlys Velaryon, finally recognizing him.

Similarly, Alyn of Hull, the brother of Addam, proudly declares to his father, “I am a child of the salt and sea, and I desire nothing more,”but his words are only met with a half-hearted nod. Addam also receives little recognition from their father, who curtly responds, “Well done,”to the Sea Snake.

This shows that Corlys is encouraging Alyn to take a chance with the dragons and be in the spotlight. Nevertheless, Alyn remains calm, recognizing that his skills are most valuable at sea.
