House of the Dragon showrunner addresses Season 2 cliffhanger controversy following fan backlash

In response to the criticism that the Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon felt like a “70-minute trailer”for the next season, showrunner Ryan Condal has addressed the passionate reaction.

As the second season’s eighth episode nears its end, the stage is being prepared for a fierce war. Tyland Lannister and Sharako Lohar are on their way to confront Lord Corlys’ army, while the Lannisters and Starks are making their way towards the battlefield. In the midst of all this chaos, Aegon makes a hasty escape from King’s Landing, leaving the city vulnerable for anyone to claim it.

After that… it fades to black, leaving viewers without an Episode 9. In contrast to Game of Thrones, the second season of House of the Dragon only consisted of eight episodes instead of the usual 10. As expected, fans have been somewhat disappointed by the cliffhanger, as they were anticipating a major battle to conclude the season.

During a press conference, Condal, the co-creator of the prequel alongside George R.R. Martin, discussed the choice to conclude the season with its eighth episode instead of ending with the Battle of the Gullet, the largest naval battle in the history of Westeros.

“According to Variety, the creators of Fire & Blood wanted to give the Gullet, known as one of the most highly anticipated action events, the proper time and attention it deserves. They believed it deserved just as much time and space as the first most anticipated event.”

As it is clear to anyone who has watched the finale, we are leading up to that specific event. The event will take place in the near future, as the story of House of the Dragon unfolds.

“With our current knowledge, this upcoming project will be the greatest achievement we have accomplished thus far. Our goal is to have ample time and resources to deliver an exciting and satisfying experience for our fans, deserving of their support.”

Despite the disappointment of House of the Dragon Season 3 not being released until 2026, Condal reassured fans that the finale will eventually be worth the wait. “I understand the desire for a summer release,”he added.

“The show is incredibly intricate and each season feels like we’re producing multiple feature films. I apologize for the delay, but I can assure you that if Rook’s Rest and the Red Sowing are anything to go by, the Battle of the Gullet in the future will be a phenomenal success.”
