House of the Dragon star defends against unfair criticism of Blood and Cheese

Phia Saban, a cast member, has had to defend her character’s reaction to Blood and Cheese, which has proven to be the most divisive moment of House of the Dragon Season 2 thus far.

Despite Blood and Cheese appearing in the first episode of House of the Dragon Season 2 and subsequently leaving, fans continue to discuss their appearance. While some have criticized the portrayal of the book scene for not being brutal enough, others have praised the haunting details and impressive performances.

Regardless, the outcome is dependent on Helaena (Phia Saban) and her response to her child’s decapitation. Although it is a difficult moment, Helaena received criticism from viewers for seemingly surrendering her son too easily. When Blood and Cheese demand that she identify the boy, who is the future king, she does so almost immediately.

Saban explained to the HOTD podcast (via The Wrap) that her decision in that moment was completely understandable. She believed that the men were conveying a message of their own power and capability to kill, giving the victims the choice to make it easy or difficult for themselves.

Saban believes that the criticism directed at Helaena is somewhat unjust, taking into account the circumstances.

“It is clear that there is nothing easy about this situation,”she remarked. “I don’t think it’s fair to say that someone braver would simply choose to have neither of them. In that moment, I don’t believe that is a viable option.”

“I find it admirable that she was honest from the beginning, as it shows the gravity of the situation for her. It’s clear that she has a deep sense of responsibility and knows that there is no room for error. Ultimately, it’s a matter of saving a child’s life.”

Indeed, Helaena successfully rescues her daughter, Jaehaera, from the clutches of the assassins who were also responsible for the death of her son. She quickly seizes her daughter and makes a daring escape through the door, sprinting across the Red Keep to reach her mother, Alicent. Although it is a fictional event, it is not surprising that fans have fiercely defended this pivotal scene.
