Fabien Frankel, star of House of the Dragon, has been limiting his comments on Instagram due to online harassment from fans of the show.
As the Game of Thrones spinoff progresses, Frankel’s portrayal of Criston Cole has solidified his position as the most despised character in House of the Dragon Season 2.
Despite once supporting Rhaenyra Targaryen, Cole has now turned against her and entered into a sexual relationship with Alicent Hightower. He has also managed to take Otto Hightower’s position as Hand of the King, causing him to become an outcast among viewers.
Despite attempts to contain it, the animosity towards his persona has spilled over into the real world. On Frankel’s Instagram page, comments have been restricted due to a surge of hostile and malicious comments that have been directed towards him.

Despite receiving hateful comments directed towards his character, Frankel has taken the criticism upon himself. In response, the actor has imposed restrictions on what can be written, sparking confusion among online audiences.
“One X user remarked, ‘People have such a parasocial attachment to fictional characters, it’s almost like they view them as real, like Jesus Christ.’”
“Another user voiced their frustration at the ongoing issue of people confusing actors with the characters they play. They questioned why this concept seems to be difficult for some to understand and asked if they lack real-life friendships.”
Despite years passing since the bullying of Jake Lloyd and Ahmed Best, it’s disheartening to see that the toxic behavior within fandom has not improved. In fact, it may have even worsened. While some may argue that it’s due to a lack of understanding, it’s clear that these individuals are simply ignorant and closed-minded.
“A fourth individual expressed their frustration with the widespread delusion that hinders people from acknowledging that disliking an unlikable character is a result of the actor’s successful portrayal.”
It is not uncommon for actors to face backlash for their portrayal of a character. In fact, just recently, a member of the Furiosa cast was forced to release a statement, clarifying that he should not be associated with his on-screen antagonist.
Despite Frankel’s portrayal being criticized, he is not the only actor from the Game of Thrones universe to face backlash for their on-screen character. Actor Jack Gleeson, who played Joffrey, received the majority of hate during the show’s run.
