House of the Dragon Surpasses One Prime Video Show in Streaming Ratings

House of the Dragon Season 2 was close to dominating America’s streaming ratings, but it was ultimately edged out by a ‘diabolical’ show on Prime Video.

Upon the premiere of House of the Dragon Season 1, it faced the daunting task of not only filling its predecessor’s shoes, but also restoring the faith of Game of Thrones fans after the controversial ending of Season 8.

The premiere of House of the Dragon marked the biggest debut in HBO Max’s history, setting a strong start for the series. The show maintained its high viewership throughout, with the finale drawing in 9.3 million viewers.

Despite the two-year gap between seasons, Season 2 still experienced a decline in viewership, with its premiere only attracting 7.8 million viewers, while the controversial finale managed to reach 8.9 million viewers.

The latest update of Nielsen’s streaming top 10 list shows House of the Dragon in second place with 1.1 billion minutes viewed from July 15-21.

This puts it in a superior position compared to Netflix’s Cobra Kai (1.08bn), Bluey (1.035bn), and Suits (850 million), with the latter making a reappearance on the platform’s chart with its ninth season.

Despite its success, it was no match for The Boys Season 4, which garnered an impressive 1.33 billion minutes watched within the same time frame.

This is quite an accomplishment. It marks The Boys’ inaugural appearance at the top of Nielsen’s rankings, and it has consistently maintained a spot in the top 10 every week since its debut on June 13, with a total of one billion minutes streamed.

This marks the first instance in which a Prime Video series has consistently surpassed one billion minutes viewed for eight consecutive times, solidifying its position as the top title on the streaming service.

Unfortunately for fans of both shows, the next seasons will not be released until 2026. However, The Boys will be filling that void with the release of Gen V Season 2, while HBO plans to premiere A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms next year.

Ryan Condal, the showrunner of HOTD, has explained and defended the delay between seasons by stating that the show’s complexity requires them to essentially create multiple feature films each season. He also apologizes for the wait.

“Based on the successes of Rook’s Rest and the Red Sowing, I have full confidence in our team’s abilities to achieve a resounding victory in the future Battle of the Gullet.”
