House of the Dragon: The Kiss Between Rhaenyra and Mysaria Explained

The unexpected kiss between Rhaenyra and Mysaria in Season 2 of House of the Dragon was completely justified for those who were closely following the story.

Despite the focus on the ongoing Targaryen civil war in House of the Dragon Season 2, viewers were left puzzled by a particular moment in Episode 6.

Despite their tumultuous history, Daemon’s former lover and spy mistress, Mysaria, and his wife, Rhaenyra, have formed a strong alliance in the first six episodes and share a passionate kiss.

The surprise kiss between the two women may have shocked some viewers, but for many, it was a logical and meaningful moment.

The reason behind Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s kiss

Rhaenyra and Mysaria shared a kiss after the latter wholeheartedly supported Rhaenyra’s right to the Iron Throne.

Despite being the queen of dragons, the dragon queen finds herself in a delicate situation. Her husband is preoccupied with dreams of incest at Harrenhal, while her small council remains skeptical of her war strategies.

Despite the support of her remaining son, Rhaenyra was left feeling helpless and alone after losing Rhaenys and Lucerys to Aemond.

Nevertheless, Mysaria, who was previously involved with Daemon and now holds the position of mistress of whispers, was eager to assume the role of Rhaenyra’s top supporter.

Mysaria professed her full support for Rhaenyra’s cause after recounting a traumatic experience from her past. This led to a warm embrace and an intense kiss between the two.

Sonoya Mizuno, who portrays Mysaria, revealed that the intimate scene between her and Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra) was not planned. They both simply followed their instincts in the moment and felt it was the appropriate action to take.

According to Mizuno’s interview with TheWrap, the kiss between Mysaria and Rhaenyra was not specifically scripted. Instead, it was intended to be a moment of tension between the two characters, with the possibility of interruption. However, due to the natural chemistry between the actors and the emotional intensity of the scene, D’Arcy’s instinct to comfort Mysaria led to the organic progression into a kiss.

D’Arcy reiterated her co-star’s view on the kiss, expressing to Variety that the relationship between Rhaenyra and Mysaria is characterized by honesty. Initially, Rhaenyra feels a strong sense of empathy and gratitude towards Mysaria for her courageous life. However, as they embrace and their bodies touch, their desire for each other becomes purely physical.

Despite some fans feeling that this moment may have been queerbaiting on the show’s part, D’Arcy clarified that Rhaenyra had previously explored more queer-centric feelings due to the strong intimacy she experienced in her early relationship with Alicent.

Despite drawing inspiration from the novel Fire and Blood, the show did not include Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s notorious kiss, which was not present in the source material.

Despite this, their developing relationship in the series is strikingly similar to the one depicted in the book, but with some variations.

Despite being married to Rhaenyra, Daemon continues to have a sexual relationship with Mysaria, who also serves as Rhaenyra’s mistress of whispers in Fire and Blood.

Despite not being officially appointed to the small council, Mysaria often acted as an enabler of Daemon’s most violent desires. For instance, she suggested the idea of taking Alicent and Helaena to a brothel and forcibly impregnating them with illegitimate children.

Despite their tumultuous feelings for Daemon and their precarious positions within the hierarchy of King’s Landing, the two women form a strong bond in Season 2 of House of the Dragon.

The intimacy shared between them is the result of a desire to be appreciated for their true selves and the pursuit of empowerment from someone who sees them as equals.
