In Sons of the Forest, many key items are needed to progress through the story and find useful tools and weapons. After a crash on a remote island, players must survive in a dark and cannibalistic forest along with an AI companion named Kelvin.
To get started, they are given some useful items such as a GPS locator, an axe, and a lighter. However, other vital items hidden around the island make life easier for the survivor; for example, a rope gun can be used to hunt animals from afar.
The Rope Cannon can be used to set up ziplines, making it faster and safer to move through the forest. It is also necessary to explore some caves on the island, where you can find other necessary tools.
The rope cannon itself is located deep in one of the mutant-infested cave systems under the forest, and finding it without preparation can be tricky. So let’s take a look at how to get a rope cannon and zipline in Sons of the Forest.
Before picking up a rope gun, get a long-range weapon like a pistol or a bow and arrow. The caves are full of ogres that have mutated into fearsome monsters; they often attack in groups, so it’s best to bring multiple weapons with you.
Playing with other players is also a good strategy if online co-op is possible, especially since AI companions cannot enter caves. On the western side of the island, a raft can be found in the ocean that has weapons on it; those who don’t want to mine it first can make a bow and arrow in their inventory using sticks, feathers and rope.
Players should also stock up on medicine, food, a light source, and water if they have a flask. The starting lighter does not provide much light, but for more visibility, you can find a flashlight or make a torch with flares.
Rope gun location
The Rope Cannon is located in one of the caves marked on the GPS, on the west side of Round Lake, just south of the crossroads where the three rivers meet. The entrance to the cave is in a rocky mound near a small lake next to it.
Once inside, you will find yourself in an open flooded room with many mutants. Throwing flares is recommended to give yourself some light while fighting them off. They are blind but fast and use their hearing to track movements so it is not easy to catch them all. Be careful not to use up all your ammo in this fight, stick to hand-to-hand combat whenever possible.
Once all the mutants have been destroyed, collect all the resources found in the room and then follow the path to the left side of the room. Keep moving forward until you come across a giant mutant stuck in the wall blocking your path. Next to the kneeling worker are two time bombs that you can use to blow him up and clear the way.
To use bombs, pick them up and equip them, then left click to throw one of them. Be careful not to aim too high as the bomb may bounce off the monster towards you.
Squeeze through the rocks and continue down the corridor. You will find a room with a lot of killed workers and mutants, including a stronger version with tentacles all over its body and more grotesque creatures. Players will also find a letter from one of the workers that there is more light in the workers’ caves.
In addition, supplies are scattered around the room. To go further, move to the back of the room, keeping to the left. From here there is a direct path to the rope cannon. In the next corridor, corpses hang from the ceiling, and the notorious mutant babies live nearby.
Eventually, the ceiling gets low and starts to get closer, so players have to squeeze through it and beware of being attacked from behind. Resources can be found along the way; however, a fight can be avoided by running forward and not looking back. A few more resources can be found if you take the right path at the fork in the road; however, it leads to a dead end where there are ammo and other supplies. The left path leads deeper into the cave, and there will be a small opening that players will have to crouch through.
Move forward and be careful not to miss other mutants lurking nearby. After walking down the corridor, you will see another flooded area and a light ahead, indicating that the rope gun is nearby. Head towards the light and you’ll find a rope gun in a case next to the container you’re searching.
A rope path has been installed in the cave, which players can now use with a rope gun in their hands. At the top of the zipline, press E to lower it, follow the path forward until a small crack appears in the walls. Use it to leave the cave.
How to use ziplines?
The Rope Gun can be used to set zipline points, making it easier and faster to get down the mountain. To use the rope cannon, players will need a rope and a grappling hook. Ropes can be found near abandoned campsites and cannibal camps, as well as in random containers on the island. There is also a possibility that there are grappling hooks hidden somewhere, but if they are not, then there is a 3D printer that can print them.
To create a zipline, use the rope cannon to shoot the first grapple. Then stick the rope into the ground where you want the end point to be. Use the same method for pre-installed ziplines to descend them. If you want to return the rope, right click while looking at it and it will return to your inventory.
