Achievements were added to World of Warcraft with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack and are one of the reasons Arthas and the Frozen Throne’s legacy is a favorite addition to Azeroth. Achievements are given for almost everything, even for such modest secondary professions as cooking, fishing and first aid.
In World of Warcraft, fishing is a profession available to any character. The Salty title is an achievement that can be earned regardless of role, class, or faction. However, this is one of the most difficult titles to obtain, so it is helpful to have a guide to work towards this goal.
Useful tips for fishing
Some achievements don’t require the fishing skill, but it’s always a good idea to increase this skill, even for those who have reached the maximum. The following items, which can be equipped or carried in the player’s inventory, increase the fishing skill:
- Gear and accessories are rewards for completing quests in World of Warcraft. Two examples are the Weathered Fishing Hat, which can be obtained by completing Old Man Barlow’s quest in Outland, or the Boots of the Bay, which are given as a prize for winning the Kaluak Fishing Derby.
- There are many fishing rods in the game and they are easy to get. Players who reach Exalted with Kaluak can receive the only Purple Fishing Rod on Azeroth.
- There are several lures for catching fish, including items such as Aerodynamic Fishing Attractors that players can craft themselves. Night Serpents thrown by undead enemies are one of the best bait until players can use Nordskool Glow Worms.
- The Northrend Fishing Glove Enchantment, which grants +5 fishing skill, was introduced in Wrath of the Lich King. It can be found on the auction house if you can’t find a caster to craft it for you.
- Captain Rumi’s beer recipe can be brewed by players to improve their fishing. Underground Elixir sometimes spawns in the sewers of Dalaran and can also have a positive effect on fishing, but is randomly selected.
Experienced angler
To earn the title of Salty, a character must complete 15 meta-achievements. Some of them are easier than others, but players agree that they are one of the hardest achievements overall. That is why Salty is one of the rarest games with a long and infamous list of achievements.
In World of Warcraft, the retail version also has an achievement for skilled anglers, which also gives the title of Salty. However, not all meta achievements are the same. In later incarnations of the game, other fish have appeared and some contests no longer exist; Enemies in the retail version are now dependent on the player’s level, so exploration isn’t as dangerous.
Achievement name |
Requirements |
How to complete |
Fish leave no trace |
Learn the “Find Fish” skill, which shows schools of fish on the mini-map. |
Find the book known as The Weather-Beaten Journal to learn this important skill. Any fishing knot that yields chests or crates is ideal, so Azeroth’s wreckage knots are the best option. |
Fishing diplomat |
Catch fish in Orgrimmar and fish in Stormwind. Neither, but both, giving PvP a twist. |
One half is easy and the other is much harder. Horde players can sneak up to the main gate and hide under the water, while Alliance players will have to sneak in while raiding or using stealth. |
Old gnome and the sea |
Successfully catch a fish from a school. |
A simple achievement that most players receive at the very beginning of their career. Lures are not required, but they can help, and schools are not found in cities or low-level areas. |
Mr. Pinchy’s Magic Box of Crayfish |
Fish out Mr. Pinchy and make three wishes, one of which can give you a Magic Box of Crawfish. |
The Highlander Mixed Schools in Terrokar Forest give a Magic Lobster and its wishes have a 2-day cooldown. The player will have to find not only Mr. Pinchy, but also a magic box, which also contains a companion pet. |
Northrend Angler |
Fish from ten different knots of fish found in Northrend. |
Be at least level 68 and complete the Great Fishing Mastery. Ten fish are listed in Achievements and can be tracked as a quest, giving the player a handy list. |
deadly catch |
Use the Dirty Skunk Lure to fish out an optional boss in Zul’Gurub, Gahz’ranka. |
Mud Skunks can only be found in the dungeon, and it takes five of them to craft one lure. Or join a raid for levels 60 to 70, and higher level characters can enter on their own. |
The one who didn’t leave |
Catch one of the 10 listed rare fish. |
The player only needs to find one, but it is one of the lowest drop rates in the game, and success is mostly down to luck. One of them is a rare loot that is only available during the fishing competition in Stranglethorn. |
coin master |
Complete the Dalaran Fountain Coin Achievements and earn the Dalaran Titanium Seal. |
Three achievements: Penny for Your Thoughts, Silver in the City, and There’s Gold in That Fountain. Catch all kinds of coins, and there are a lot of them, so be patient. |
Outrageous Angler |
Fish from six different knots of fish found in Outland. |
Be at least level 60 and complete the fishing skill training. Six fish are listed in Achievements, and like the Northrend quest, they can be tracked. |
Garbage man |
Fish out of each of the five different Scrap Nodes scattered throughout Azeroth, Outland, and Northrend. |
The Find Fish ability helps a lot here, and it may take some searching to find each specific node. |
Great Master of Fishing |
Complete the training at the level of the Grand Master of Fishing. |
If the player has reached the maximum fishing level and can visit Marcia Chase in Dalaran, they can complete this achievement. |
1000 fish |
As the name suggests, junk like old skulls or sealed chests doesn’t count. |
Players who want to increase their fishing level will get this achievement without even trying. Those who maintain their fishing level at their character level will naturally reach this point around level 60. |
Lurker above |
Fish out the Lurker in the Serpentshrine Cave. |
Similar to the boss in Zul’Gurub, and although bait is not required, it does require a skill of at least 300. |
Old Man Barload |
Complete all five Outland fishing quests. |
Old Man Barlow can be found at Slimear Lake in Terrokar Forest. The quests he gives are randomly selected, but lucky players can complete this achievement in five days. Be at least level 58 and become a master fisherman. |
Master Angler of Azeroth |
Win either the Kaluak Fishing Derby or the Throney Throne Fishing Extravaganza. |
Carry the best fishing tackle available, grab the highest tier lures and use the fastest mount. The Kalu’ak Fishing Derby is only for players with access to Northrend, but Stranglethorn Vale is open to any character who can enter the zone. |
