How James Gunn’s Approach to the DC Universe Will Differ from Recent Marvel Movies

James Gunn’s recent comments may disappoint fans who were hoping for a sprawling DC Universe similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, this news may be welcome for those who are tired of complex multiverses.

The DC Universe is currently in the midst of filming, with production underway for both Peacemaker Season 2 and Superman.

Several additional projects in the DCU are currently being developed, such as Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, The Authority, Lanterns, and potentially an animated series centered around Blue Beetle.

Despite all existing in the same universe, the titles in the DCU won’t be as closely connected as those in the MCU, according to the man himself. He was asked whether it would be necessary to watch every DCU film in order to understand what was happening.

“According to Gunn, each project should function as its own standalone story, even though they are connected and exist in the same universe. This was stated in a response on Threads.”

This new direction for the DC Universe is likely to be a breath of fresh air for fans who may be feeling fatigued by the constant stream of Marvel films. Although Marvel’s shared universe approach was once praised, it appears to have played a role in causing fan burnout and fatigue over the years.

Despite the fact that the shared universe reached a seemingly perfect crescendo in Avengers Endgame, rewarding the fans who had followed over a decade of films, it still doesn’t alleviate the situation.

However, despite the events of Endgame, the universe continued on, causing frustration among fans who had yet to develop a connection with Marvel’s upcoming generation of heroes.

Gunn seems to be making an effort to steer clear of that mistake. Although the DC Universe films will be interconnected, they will also have a stronger sense of individuality, resembling the earlier Marvel Cinematic Universe films prior to the franchise’s shift towards building towards Avengers movies.

Despite this, there are already foundations in place for the DCU to intertwine with itself. It has been confirmed that Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. will play a significant role in both Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2, and the upcoming Superman film will also showcase a plethora of other DC superheroes.

Creature Commandos, the initial addition to the upcoming DC Universe, is set to debut in December 2024. In the meantime, you can stay entertained by exploring all the superhero films and television series scheduled for release in 2024, as well as catching up on the latest and greatest streaming movies and shows of the month.
