How Julius Became Lucius in Black Clover: Explained

As fans of Black Clover may be aware, the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc concluded with the revelation of Wizard King Julius Novachrono’s true identity as Lucius Zogratis, which came as a shock to many. This turn of events has left fans wondering about the circumstances that led to Julius assuming the identity of Lucius.

Despite popular belief, Julius did not transform into Lucius. In fact, Lucius Zogratis was born with two souls, the other being Julius Novachrono. For years, Lucius had allowed Julius’s soul to dominate their shared body. However, when Damnatio Kira confronted Julius about the devil possessing Time Magic Astaroth, Lucius was forced to take back control and reveal himself.

Lucius Zogratis was born in the Spade Kingdom with two souls inhabiting his body, one of which belonged to Julius Novachrono. As the eldest of the Zogratis siblings, he possessed the greatest potential to become a host for a devil. As a result, he was chosen to host one of the three underworld rulers, Astaroth.

Despite the lack of an explanation for its origins, Lucius Zogratis had a desire to bring about peace. In pursuit of this goal, he devised a plan to use the powers of devils to grant humanity undying bodies. Upon sharing this plan with his siblings, Lucius eventually traveled to the Clover Kingdom and went into hiding. As a result, his body was taken over by his other soul, Julius Novachrono.

Why did Lucius disguise himself as Julius?

Lucius Zogratis assumed the identity of Julius Novachrono in order to obtain Lucifero’s heart for his goal of establishing peace. Consequently, he traveled to the Clover Kingdom in search of a proficient Dark Magic wielder and a skilled World Tree Magic user, both of whom were essential for the development and expansion of the Tree of Qliphoth.

As shown in the series, Lucius, also known as Julius, discovered the Dark Magic user Yami Sukehiro and the World Tree Magic user William Vangeance, and enlisted them as Magic Knights. This decision proved to be beneficial as the two individuals grew in strength over the years. Many years later, following Lucius’s instructions, the Dark Triad launched an attack on the Clover Kingdom and abducted Yami and William as part of their plan.

The Tree of Qliphoth serves as a mystical conduit linking the realm of the living to the underworld. Using half of his power, Lucifero was able to breach this channel and enter the living world. It was Asta who ultimately defeated him, with the help of Lucius who repeatedly reversed time to allow the Magic Knights to arrive at the most effective solution. In truth, Asta was the only one with the ability to defeat the devil.

After Lucifero was defeated, Lucius Zogratis enlisted the help of his associate Adramelech to retrieve Lucifero’s heart. By using this heart and gathering the remaining powers from the seventh layer of the underworld, Lucius Zogratis gained the ability to transform someone into a Paladin, an immortal being. With this, Lucius was one step closer to accomplishing his objective.

Why Lucius Eventually Revealed Himself

Despite the belief among fans that Lucius Zogratis made himself known due to Damnatio Kira’s detection of him, the truth is that he had been attempting to regain control of his body for some time. This was foreshadowed in the manga during the later part of the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc, as Julius sensed a powerful force emerging from within himself.

Therefore, it can be inferred that Lucius unmasked himself because, with Lucifero’s arrival in the mortal realm, his task as Julius Novachrono had been fulfilled. He was no longer required to act as the Wizard King and could resume his true identity to carry out the remainder of his scheme.
