With Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC approaching, how many new bosses will we be able to face? Here’s what we know a few months before release.
When Elden Ring launched in 2022, it quickly became an unprecedented cultural phenomenon for a FromSoft game. While Dark Souls had already conquered a large player niche – but a niche nonetheless – Elden Ring broke through to the general public and sold more than 20 million copies in its first year.
And while the RPG’s massive map is packed with content, story fragments, and secrets to discover, many have been eagerly awaiting what comes next. The Elden Ring DLC has been confirmed in 2023, and finally revealed with more details in a first trailer.
Among the expected new features, how can we miss what made Souls famous: epic and excruciatingly difficult fights against merciless bosses. Shadow of the Erdtree will certainly have no shortage of challenges of this ilk.
How many bosses are there in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree?
Although an exact number hasn’t been confirmed, FromSoftare president Hidetaka Miyazaki has hinted “that there will be more than 10 new boss fights” in Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.
However, many fans expect that the studio has played down things to positively surprise players. To support this theory, we can notably rely on Miyazaki’s recent interview for Eurogamer, during which he described the DLC as “the greatest expansion ever made” by FromSoftware.
Naturally, some bosses could be reskins or alternate versions of an already existing enemy. Fights against two already existing bosses are also to be considered. However, it’s a safe bet that at least ten completely new bosses await us in Shadow of the Erdtree.
The first trailer for the DLC has already given us a small glimpse of several bosses, including the impressive Messmer the Impaler.
The reveal trailer alone gave us our first look at many of these new faces, including big bad Messmer the Impaler. A figure so menacing that she is entitled to her statuette in the physical collector’s edition.
The developers even mentioned certain “optional” bosses at a difficulty level equivalent to that of Malenia. If you were waiting for a new challenge that lives up to FromSoft’s reputation, everything suggests that this DLC will be made for you.
