Yuji Itadori’s Death in Jujutsu Kaisen
First Death: The Fearsome Womb Arc
Yuji Itadori experienced his initial death in the Fearsome Womb Arc of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Before this, in order to save Megumi from a Cursed Spirit, Yuji consumed one of Sukuna’s fingers and transformed into him to defeat the Cursed Spirit. However, this action resulted in Yuji being put on trial by the authorities at Jujutsu High, who had originally planned to execute him. Fortunately, Yuji was given a second opportunity and was granted the chance to study under the guidance of Satoru Gojo, thus avoiding a premature demise.
During a crucial task at a detention center, Yuji, Megumi Fushiguro, and Nobara Kugisaki encountered a threatening Cursed Spirit that emerged from a Cursed Womb. Understanding the seriousness of the situation, Yuji made the decision to enlist Sukuna’s aid in defeating the curse, even though it meant relinquishing control of his body to the King of Curses.
As anticipated, Sukuna took full advantage of the situation by violently tearing out Yuji’s heart and taking over his body. In a desperate attempt to save Yuji, Megumi confronted Sukuna alone, trying to appeal to the small remnants of humanity remaining within Yuji.
Despite thoroughly tormenting Megumi, Sukuna eventually released his hold on Yuji’s body. However, upon regaining consciousness, Yuji briefly conversed with Megumi before succumbing to the severe injuries inflicted by Sukuna’s removal of his heart.
Yuji found himself confined within Sukuna’s Innate Domain. The two engaged in a fierce battle, with Sukuna quickly gaining the upper hand. Despite being overpowered, Yuji was surprised to find out that they were both still alive. Sukuna then proposed a deal to revive Yuji, but only under certain conditions that would greatly benefit him.
Despite Yuji rejecting the proposal and demanding an unconditional revival, Sukuna remained undeterred and suggested a battle with the condition that the victor’s terms would be carried out. Though Yuji accepted, Sukuna’s superior strength quickly led to their triumph. In the end, Sukuna fulfilled the previously agreed upon conditions that were beneficial to Yuji’s interests, resulting in his revival.
Second Death
The second encounter with death for Yuji Itadori occurred during the Itadori’s Extermination Arc in Jujutsu Kaisen. Following the Shibuya Incident, while Gojo Satoru was absent, the authorities at Jujutsu High exploited the situation and ordered for Yuji Itadori to be executed. The responsibility of carrying out the sentence was given to Okkotsu Yuta.
Yuta Okkotsu, who made his debut in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, is a noteworthy sorcerer who possesses the Queens of the Cursed Spirits, Orimoto Rika. When ordered by his superiors, Yuta was forced to make a difficult choice – to follow orders and fatally stab Yuji. This decision ultimately resulted in Yuji’s second death.
After some time had passed, Yuji suddenly regains consciousness in an unfamiliar place. He sees Yuta next to him and is confused by their current situation. Yuta clarifies that he was following orders from Gojo Satoru to keep an eye on Yuji by pretending to be part of a performance. Yuta also reveals that he had to make a Binding Vow to “kill”Yuji as part of his initiation to become his executioner and gain approval from higher authorities.
Yuta apologized for his actions when Yuji asked how he had managed to survive. Yuta revealed that he had used the Reverse Cursed Technique at the same time Yuji’s heart had stopped beating, which resulted in him healing Yuji’s heart and bringing him back to life.
Final thoughts
Yuji Itadori has faced two crucial moments in his journey through Jujutsu Kaisen where he was on the brink of death. These experiences served as tests of his endurance and the strength of his relationships with his loved ones. The first instance was when Sukuna tore out Yuji’s heart in the Fearsome Womb Arc, which was a shocking and unexpected event. Later, he encountered a tense and dramatic showdown with Yuta Okkotsu during the Yuji Itadori Extermination Arc.
Yuji’s knack for narrowly escaping death has come to define his character in the Jujutsu Kaisen series.
