However, it wasn’t until the Fake Karakura Town arc that his true identity as a captain-level Shinigami was unveiled. It was only in the Thousand Year Blood War arc that his true origins were finally revealed.
Isshin is a mentor figure who exudes a carefree and experienced aura, evident in his playful and whimsical nature throughout the story. Despite this, his background as a member of the Shiba clan and his previous role as captain of the Tenth Division have sparked curiosity among fans about his true strength.

The Power of Ichigo’s Father: An Explanation
Isshin is a fully-fledged Shinigami who possesses all the typical abilities of one. Additionally, he is highly skilled in various techniques, such as Flash Steps, and is capable of utilizing both Shikai and Bankai. However, the true extent of Isshin’s powers and level of strength remain unknown as he has yet to engage in a serious battle against formidable adversaries.
Despite his brief confrontation with Aizen, which caused the Hogyoku to enhance Aizen’s power even further, it was evident that Isshin’s former captaincy was well-deserved. His lineage as a member of the noble Shiba family and his extensive experience and knowledge over the years placed him on the same level as pre-Bankai Kenpachi.
Explaining Isshin Kurosaki’s Origins in Bleach
Isshin Kurosaki, who was previously known as Isshin Shiba, hailed from the Shiba family, which was one of the five founding noble families of the Soul Society. Despite the Shibas no longer being among the four current noble families – Shihoin, Kuchiki, and two others that remain undisclosed – they were still highly respected and produced exceptionally talented Shinigamis within their bloodline.
Isshin held the position of captain in the 10th Division, with Rangiku and Hitsugaya as his second and third in command. He was often portrayed as a laid-back and easygoing individual, similar to Shunsui, and relied on his subordinates to handle most of his responsibilities during his time as captain.
Isshin was a captain alongside Byakuya, Shunsui, Ukitake, and Unohana, making him a member of a highly experienced and potentially more powerful version of the Gotei 13. However, he ultimately gave up his Shinigami status and abilities by sacrificing them to seal the hollow that had infiltrated Masaki Kurosaki’s soul.
Isshin Kurosaki, a direct descendant of the Shiba family, adopted the Kurosaki name after becoming human and marrying Masaki Kurosaki, a Quincy. He then established a medical clinic in the human world with assistance from Urahara and Ryuken, providing support for Masaki and their children Ichigo, Karin, and Yuzu.
Isshin’s Powers and Abilities
Isshin’s ancestry from the Shiba clan bestows upon him a formidable reserve of reiatsu and the natural aptitude commonly found among members of the noble family. He has also demonstrated exceptional skill in both sword fighting and unarmed combat, as seen in his battle against Aizen in the original Bleach series. His zanpakuto, Engetsu, possesses a standard form and can be released into Shikai.
Despite numerous dialogues hinting at his possession of Bankai and his former captain status being the biggest indicator, it has never been explicitly demonstrated in the story or side content.
During the Bleach TYBW arc anime, it was revealed that Aizen had intentionally injured Isshin to prevent him from releasing his Bankai during their fight against the hollow White.
