As the much-anticipated release of Smile 2 approaches, director Parker Finn shares insights into how his cast perfects the film’s signature unsettling smile.
The sequel, Smile 2, presents a fresh perspective, centering on pop star Sky Riley as she becomes enmeshed with the sinister entity from the horror franchise.
Parker Finn returns to both write and direct the film, which gives him the ability to guide his actors in mastering that chilling smile.
During an interview at the Los Angeles premiere with The Hollywood Reporter, Finn described the preparation of his cast: “There are moments when actors come in clearly having rehearsed, like I can see they’ve been practicing in front of the mirror, and then there are times when they need a bit more direction.”
Regarding the specifics of his guidance, Finn elaborated: “The goal is to smile in a way that seems friendly; it’s important not to overdo it or strain, but to focus on separating the expression of the eyes from the smile, along with the angle of the head.”
He continued, “There’s a slight head tilt involved; we drew inspiration from the renowned ‘Kubrick Stare,’ which helped shape the performance, ultimately utilizing the tools of filmmaking.”
This ‘Kubrick Stare’ is famously exemplified by Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Interestingly, Nicholson’s son, Ray Nicholson, is charged with delivering that iconic “smile” in this film.
On the red carpet, Ray Nicholson remarked that he perfected the smile in just one take, thanks to the guidance of co-star Naomi Scott.
“Before we started, Naomi prepped me, saying, ‘[Finn] is very particular; he works closely with everyone. Don’t worry if you think you’re off track; he just has specific expectations.’ After we did it, Naomi said, ‘Well, that’s one take, done!’”
Smile 2 will have its previews today and tomorrow, leading to a global release on Friday, October 18.
