How to Connect a PS4 Controller to a PS5

The Sony DualSense is a top-notch controller that showcases Sony’s cutting-edge haptic feedback technology. Nonetheless, its steep cost may pose challenges if a replacement is required, particularly if it succumbs to the common issue of drift.

If you have owned a PlayStation before, chances are you have a lot of PS4 DualShock 4 controllers sitting unused. The good news is that you can dust off these forgotten PS4 relics and use them with your new Sony console.

Connecting and Using a PS4 Controller with a PS5

  1. Turn on PS5
  2. Navigate to Settings
  3. SelectGeneral
  4. Navigate to ‘Bluetooth Accessories’
  5. Put DualShock 4 into ‘Pairing mode’
  6. Press and hold the PS4 controller’s Share button and PlayStation button until the light on the top of the controller starts to flash
  7. Look at your TV for DualShock 4′ appearing as a Bluetooth devices
  8. Select it with your PS5 controller and press X

To configure your PS4 DualShock 4 controller for use on your PS5, begin by powering on your PS5 console and accessing the system’s settings through the cog icon located in the top-right corner of the screen.

To get there, simply scroll down and choose the ‘Accessories’ category. On the next page, click on ‘General’ and then select ‘Bluetooth Accessories.’

Once a few seconds have passed, the controller will start flashing and will then be recognized by your PS5. Simply choose the PS4 controller from the options on the screen and you can start playing any PS4 game on your PS5.

Is a PS4 Controller a Viable Option for the PS5?

Despite being a viable option for the PS5, the PS4 controller does have one major drawback that limits its compatibility.

The PlayStation 5 is compatible with the PlayStation 4 DualShock controller, but it is only functional for playing PS4 games. Attempting to use a PS4 controller to play a PS5 game will result in it not functioning.

In a recent post on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony explained their decision to ensure that PS5 games make full use of the platform’s new capabilities and features. This includes utilizing the advanced features of the PS5 DualSense controller.

If you try to use a PS4 DualShock controller to play a PS5 game, a warning message will be displayed on your Sony console stating, “PS5 games cannot be played with the DUALSHOCK 4 controller.”

Despite Sony’s patent on their haptic feedback technology, you can still use third-party PS5 controllers to play PS5 games. While you may not experience the same fantastical sensations as you would with games like Astro’s Playroom, controllers such as the Nacon Revolution 5 Pro are viable alternatives, boasting drift-free hall effect sticks.
