How to Defeat Rellana Twin Moon Knight in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Rellana, also known as Twin Moon Knight, serves as the second major boss in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree’s Legacy Dungeon. This guide will provide tips on how to successfully defeat her.

Following your victory over the Dancing Lion and your journey through Castle Ensis in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, you will come face to face with a formidable Carian Knight. This knight, known as Rellana, shares a strikingly similar fighting style and name as the one you previously encountered – but do not mistake her for Rennala. Rellana is actually the younger sister of the Carian Queen you defeated.

Despite the unknown reasons, Rellana chose to accompany Messmer the Impaler into the Shadowlands and continued to remain there, even after the Shattering War, the downfall of her house, and the defeat of the rest of the Golden Order. Now, she stands as a formidable obstacle in your journey through Elden Ring, where only one outcome can be determined.

To successfully defeat Rellana, the Twin Moon Knight in Shadow of the Ertree, follow these steps.

Finding Rellana

To locate Rellana, simply navigate through the Castle Ensis until you reach the final Site of Grace. Rellana can be found in the last section of this dungeon and you will know you are approaching a boss when you see two gold summon signs on the ground before the entrance.

By using these summon signs, you can enlist the help of two of the Followers of Miquella to assist you in the final battle. The decision is yours, as each NPC will prove to be a valuable ally and serve as a diversion for Rellana. However, it’s important to note that for every ally you bring, the boss will gain a significant increase in health and strength.

If facing a challenging boss, it may be wise to limit the number of NPC allies brought into the fight. We suggest only bringing in one ally as the boss may gain a significant advantage from additional help. Alternatively, you can rely solely on your Spirit Summons as they do not provide any buffs to the boss.

How to Defeat Rellana Twin Moon Knight

Dedicated Souls fans who face off against Rellana may draw comparisons to Dark Souls 1’s Knight Artorias or Dark Souls 3’s Pontiff Sulyvahn, as the boss possesses certain resemblances to both.

Similar to Artorias, Rellana is a formidable knight with lightning-fast movements. She possesses the ability to not only strike down her opponents with her blade, but also unleash AOE attacks across the entire arena. Additionally, her agility allows her to swiftly jump from one side of the battlefield to the other. Similar to Pontiff Sulyvahn, Rellana wields two swords that are infused with different types of magic.

Her initial sword pays homage to her Carian heritage and possesses the power of Glintstone magic, while her second sword is imbued with the fiery essence of her mentor, Messmer the Impaler. To defend against her main modes of attack, be prepared to face Glintstone, fire, and physical damage.

Rellana’s resistance to Glintstone and fire damage should be noted, making her susceptible to lightning attacks. This is especially important for spellcasters who rely on those elements. For melee fighters, it may be beneficial to infuse their weapons with lightning to maximize damage against her.

If you typically use shields in your build, it may be beneficial to also bring along Carian Retaliation. This spell effectively repels Glintstone spells and can give you a strategic advantage. However, if you do not already utilize a shield in your strategy, it may be best to avoid complicating it by incorporating this spell.

Rellana Twin Moon Knight: Phase 1

In the initial stage, Rellana’s attacks will consist of many sweeping slashing combos that do not incorporate any magical elements. If you’re feeling courageous, you can attempt to parry her attacks, but it is advised to dodge and attack from behind while she is recovering.

If she is far away from you, she might use her sword to create Glintstone arcs that are easy to dodge and can be countered with a retaliatory attack. Nevertheless, it is recommended to remain behind her as this will provide more opportunities to attack her while she is preparing or recovering.

Be extremely cautious of the Glintstone Phalanx attack, as the hovering blue swords pose a significant threat. Maneuver quickly until they disappear before resuming your attack. Do not allow yourself to be hit and rendered vulnerable by this targeted attack, as it will likely result in immediate defeat. Stay composed and wait for the danger to pass before continuing the fight.

Once Rellana’s health reaches 50%, she will enter the second phase of the battle.

Rellana: Phase 2

In the second phase, Rellana will utilize Messmer’s flame to attack you and will incorporate fire-based techniques. She will also become more ferocious, imbuing her swords with both Glintstone and fire magic. Additionally, Rellana will now perform spells with her slashing attacks, wielding massive enchanted swords or unleashing explosive spinning combos.

As this stage progresses, she becomes more difficult to evade and block. It is important to stay vigilant as her attacks now have a greater area of effect, causing more damage. This means that simply trying to distance yourself from her may not be the safest option, so it is still recommended to try and position yourself behind her. If she redirects her focus towards an NPC ally or your Spirit Summons, take advantage of this brief window. Keep in mind that she can swiftly turn and target someone else at any moment.

Rellana, being a Carian princess, will also utilize her Moon magic against you during her second phase. This attack is easy to predict, but it inflicts significant AoE damage that may result in the demise of your remaining NPC allies and Spirit Summons. To avoid this attack, either move out of the area or roll through the blasts. Once you are in the clear, take advantage of the opportunity to strike Rellana while she is recovering.

Rellana poses a significant challenge for even experienced Souls players and is notably more difficult than the first boss in the DLC. However, by staying focused, studying her attacks, and exploiting her weaknesses, you can achieve victory.
