As a Tarnished venturing through the Shadow Realm, you may come across the Ghostflame early on in the DLC. The battle against the Ghostflame Dragon will prove challenging unless you adhere to the saying, “Preparation is key to success.”
Tips for defeating the Ghostflame Dragon in Elden Ring
- Important Preparation – Make sure to have Holy items and Spirit Ashes equipped. It is recommended to also have the Dragon-Hunter Katana equipped for increased damage and a ranged weapon on hand.
- Combat Strategy – The Ghostflame Dragon is known for its predictable attack patterns, so it is important to continuously focus on avoiding its attacks and aiming for its vulnerable underbelly.
The Ghostflame Dragon can be found in three different regions, with the Moorth Ruins location in Scadu Atlas being the most accessible. It is situated just South of the Moorth Highway and requires a minimum level of 160 to encounter.
Slaying a dragon is a formidable feat, reserved for the most courageous and powerful of Tarnished individuals. While the undertaking may appear intimidating, it is achievable with determination and proper preparation. Preparation Before the Battle
2.1 Deal with FrostBite
The Ghostflame Dragon’s Flame Breath attacks quickly cause FrostBite to accumulate. To counter this, you can opt for a long-ranged battle or bring along Thawfrost Boluses as consumables. Additionally, utilizing Invigorating Cured Meat and the Bestial Constitution incantation can provide assistance.
2.2 Aim for Holy Damage
The Ghostflame Dragon boasts an impressive 60% magic resistance, making it nearly impervious to your spells. This means that your attacks will only inflict less than half of their usual damage. However, do not despair; the creators have made sure to maintain a sense of fairness in the heavens.
The Ghostflame Dragon has a weakness to Holy Damage, reducing its resistance by 10%. It is recommended to use weapons that deal Holy damage, such as the Ash of War- Sacred Blade. If those are not available, applying Holy Grease to your weapons and using Holy Water Pots can also be effective in battle. These measures can greatly aid in defeating the dragon.
2.3 Necessary Equipment
In order to effectively handle the dragon, having quality equipment and items is essential-
- Spirit Ashes: Carrying Spirit Ashes with you can aid in diverting the dragon’s attention. This allows for greater chances to attack from a safe distance or tend to your own healing. It is advisable to use the Lone Wolf Ashes.
- The Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana is a formidable weapon specifically designed for slaying Dragons. It can be acquired within the depths of the Dragon’s Pit dungeon, dropped by the Ancient Dragon-Man mini-boss. Its immense power makes it highly effective against all Dragon-type creatures.
- Long-Distance Weapon: Due to the dragon’s patterns, it is necessary to frequently keep a safe distance from the enemy. A weapon with a long range allows you to inflict damage from afar.
3. Understanding the Attack Patterns of the Ghostflame Dragon
In order to defeat the Ghostflame Dragon, it is crucial to understand its attack patterns-
- The Ghostflame dragon’s breath is composed of frosty flames that inflict frostbite damage. This frostbite can rapidly accumulate, making it necessary to either escape by mounting Torrent or dodge with precision.
- Rumble: When the HP of the Ghostflame dragon reaches 60% HP, it unleashes a massive AOE attack I call the Rumble. The Rumble can be avoided with ease, the precursor is a loud roar and flames rising.
- Mighty Stomp: Ghostflame performs stomps multiple times. It deals with physical and FrostBite damage. The trick to dodge it is to wait for it to lift its legs and then roll over to dodge.
- Dragon Slam: The Ghostflame will soar into the air before sharply descending towards the ground, inflicting significant damage (with the intention of hitting you). Time your dodge for the final moment as it is unable to alter its trajectory. This creates an opening to strike immediately after the slam.
- Slash Attacks: The Ghostflame slashes its wings and tail which have a lot of reach. If you are engaged in melee combat, beware and dodge toward its legs, which will lead to the attacks missing you.
