Lord Gortash serves as one of the primary antagonists in Baldur’s Gate 3. As a member of the mysterious Chosen of the Absolute and poised to ascend to the role of Archduke, Gortash seeks to become the ruler of the city. There are multiple methods for initiating the boss battle with Lord Gartash, including one where you can avoid fighting him altogether. Upon arriving at Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, you can begin your search for Gartash.
Finding Lord Gortash
Before moving forward, ensure that you have finished the ‘Disable the Steel Watch’ quest. You are free to enter Wyrm’s Rock Fortress at any time and confront Gartash for a battle. However, it is advisable to first speak with Lord Gartash’s parents and bring Karlach along.
To contact Lord Gartash, follow these steps:
- When you reach the Basilisk Gate, you will encounter multiple Flaming Fist members. Activate them in sets of four, starting with those at the front entrance, then moving on to the hallway and barracks.
- Head to the opposite side of the keep.
- Access the back entrance by climbing onto the ledge and proceeding.
- Enter through the door and you will find yourself at the back of the Audience Chamber.
Shorten this approach by directly confronting the defense in the Audience Chamber. However, it is not advisable as the result will likely be unfavorable. The room is filled with dangerous weapons such as grenade-launchers, flaming incinerators, Flaming Fist, and Black Gauntlet.
Tips for defeating Lord Gartash
In the chamber where Lord Gartash is waiting for you, there are two incinerator traps that will slowly drain your health before the battle even starts.
As you continue forward in the main room, you will come across six incinerators scattered around the room. Additionally, there is a Force Curtain that offers Gartash extra protection. The incinerators can be located in the following areas:
- At the entry door (x2)
- On either side of the Force Curtain (x2)
- Left side of the center (x1)
- Right side of the center (x1)
Be wary, as these traps can still be triggered by Gartash’s spells. You must strategize and lure Gartash into setting off the traps himself.
Next, focus on the three Black Fist opponents in the room and make sure to hinder their vision first in order to gain an advantage. Consider using spells such as Darkness, Blindness, and Fog Cloud to achieve this.
Prior to proceeding to Gartash, there are a few tasks that you must complete:
- End the existence of the Black Fist.
- Eliminate the Force Curtain and burn the incinerator traps.
- Ensure that Gartash is occupied in order to gain a lead.
During the battle, Gartash will call upon aspects of Bane, which can quickly become chaotic. It is advised to keep him centered in the room to reduce the potential damage.
The primary difficulty lies in overcoming the Steel Watchers, rather than Lord Gartash. Gartash is a slightly above average opponent, with predictable moves and few surprises.
