Thanks to an update, FaceTime can now be used on Apple TV. If you’re unsure of how to make FaceTime calls on your Apple TV 4K, we have you covered.
Apple’s signature calling technology, FaceTime, is compatible with nearly all devices within the Apple ecosystem. Recently, the company expanded FaceTime calls to include the Apple TV 4K box through the latest updates to iOS 17 and tvOS 17.
However, there are certain considerations. You will require an iPhone, preferably a model released in or after 2018, or a relatively recent iPad. While newer Apple TV models are speculated to come with a built-in camera, it is advised to have another device available before proceeding with the steps outlined below.
How to Use FaceTime on an Apple TV 4K
Make sure to keep your Apple TV 4K, iPhone, or iPad up-to-date with the latest version of the operating system. To use these devices for a FaceTime call, they must be running tvOS 17 and iOS 17 or above.
- Open the FaceTime application on your Apple TV 4K.
- Make sure that your iPhone/iPad and the Apple TV are both connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Then, on the “Continuity Camera” screen, choose your name from the list of users.
- If your name card is not shown, simply tap on “Users” and then select “+Others” . Afterwards, scan the QR code from your iPhone or iPad and the connection to the Apple TV 4K will be established, allowing you to use it as your Continuity Camera for FaceTime calls.
- Position the iPhone or iPad so that the camera is facing towards you.
- To initiate a call, simply choose a contact. You can access your contact list or recent calls by clicking on the top left corner of your FaceTime screen.
- You can switch between Center Stage, Portrait, and Reactions mode by using your Apple TV remote. These options can be found at the bottom left corner of the screen.
When a person responds to the call, their video will appear on your TV screen, and the sound can be heard through the speakers connected to your Apple TV. If external speakers are not being used, the TV will play the audio directly.
Apple TV Models Compatible with FaceTime Video Calls
The feature of making FaceTime calls through your TV’s large screen is exclusively limited to the Apple TV 4K model. This indicates that the previous HD Apple TV streaming boxes are not suitable for this function.
Apple TV 4K models from 2017, 2021, and 2022 can all be used as long as they are connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone or iPad and have your Apple ID signed in.
