How to Start the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

Elden Ring requires players to prepare before taking on the challenges of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The expansion cannot be accessed from the menu, so make sure you are ready before attempting it.

FromSoftware has a reputation for making their downloadable content accessible only after defeating bosses and advancing through the storyline, as seen in Bloodborne where players must defeat Vicar Amelia before unlocking The Old Hunters expansion. The same holds true for their latest release, Elden Ring, as the new content in Shadow of the Erdtree is also locked behind boss fights.

The release of Shadow of the Edrtree on June 21 means that those coming back to Lands Between will need to prepare accordingly. Before beginning the DLC, certain tasks must be completed, including conquering some of the game’s toughest bosses.

Starting Shadow of the Erdtree

In order to begin Shadow of the Erdtree, players must first defeat two bosses and then interact with a designated location. This fact was initially disclosed during an interview with Famitsu by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring.

Defeating Starscourge Radahn in Caelid

In order to complete the game, all players must defeat the first boss. This boss, Starscourge Radahan, is located in Redmane Castle in the southeast of Caelid and is essential for advancing the story.

While it is advised to reach level 60 or above before facing Radahn, experienced players may choose to challenge him at an earlier stage. This is possible due to the availability of multiple NPCs who can assist during the battle.

Defeat Mohg, the Blood Lord at Mohgwyn Palace

The second boss, Mohg, Lord of Blood, can be encountered within the Mohgwyn Palace, a secret level located in the underground Siofra River. While optional, many players likely face him during their journey. To reach this location, a portal in the west of the Consecrated Snowfield must be accessed.

Although it is advised to have a level above 90 before challenging Radahn, experienced players may attempt it at an earlier stage by utilizing certain items and potions to make the battle more manageable.

After defeating these bosses, you will be able to initiate the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC by interacting with the cocoon located in Mohg’s boss arena. This cocoon holds the body of Miquella, who plays a crucial role in the story of Shadow of the Erdtree.

Is there a required level to access Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC?

There is no specific level requirement to begin playing the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC in Elden Ring.

As long as you have fulfilled the aforementioned requirements and defeated both mandatory bosses, you can access the DLC at any level.

What level should you be to start the DLC in Elden Ring?

Ultimately, the decision of when to embark on your journey in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is entirely up to you. While there is no specific level requirement, you do have the option to dive in immediately after defeating Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, the Lord of Blood. However, it is worth noting that these battles may occur later on in your overall gameplay experience.

As a result, you should have a significant number of upgraded stats and be at a relatively high level. It is unlikely that you will be able to reach these parts of the game unless you are at least level 100, but we suggest being even higher before venturing into the DLC content.

To ensure that your Vigor stat is maximized and your health is not lacking when entering Shadow of the Erdtree, it is recommended to begin Elden Ring’s DLC at levels 150 to 200. Going beyond this range is not essential due to the DLC’s use of a different scaling system.

Regardless of whether you are at level 200 or level 500, the DLC will still present a challenge at first. Shadow of the Erdtree focuses on the Scadutree Blessing system, which relies on collecting Scadutree Fragments to enhance your crucial abilities instead of relying on your regular attack and defense stats.

Regardless of your level in the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree presents its own challenges to ensure fair gameplay. Therefore, the starting level does not hold much importance as long as you have invested in increasing your health, Endurance, and relevant stats for your chosen build.
