Originally, Detroiters was set to revel in its revival on Netflix, so what went awry? Here’s everything you need to know regarding this beloved cult sitcom’s streaming status.
We have witnessed this phenomenon repeatedly – fresh TV series achieve notable acclaim at launch, only to later gain a dedicated following after being added to Netflix. A prime example is Suits, which surged in popularity in 2023, resulting in the announcement of a new spinoff titled Suits: LA.
While they may not have sparked quite the same level of excitement, other series like Warrior and The Terror experienced a resurgence on Netflix in 2024, alongside classics such as Lost and Prison Break, which also featured prominently in the Top 10 charts after their arrival on the platform.
Thus, the announcement that the cult favorite Detroiters would soon be available on Netflix filled fans with hope, with many anticipating a potential new season. Unfortunately, these hopes have been dashed before they could even take flight.
Netflix Disregards Detroiters Release
The first and second seasons of Detroiters were slated to debut on Netflix on October 15. However, not only did the show fail to premiere, but the streaming platform has also removed all related promotional content from their social media channels.
According to Uproxx, they updated their article to reflect that “Detroiters will no longer be available on Netflix starting today. The streaming giant did not provide an explanation.”
Initially, Netflix communicated this news through a now-deleted tweet in September, proclaiming, “This is an official Cramblin Duvet Advertising announcement. Detroiters Seasons 1 & 2 are making their way to Netflix in the US on October 15!”
While the exact reasoning behind this turn of events remains uncertain, rumors suggest it could stem from licensing complications or conflicts with other streaming platforms, such as Paramount Plus, which still carries the show.
Another possibility is that contractual issues could exist involving the creators, Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson.
In September 2024, HBO greenlit a new comedy series, The Chair Company, co-created by Robinson. Meanwhile, Richardson is involved in various acting projects, including his recent role in the thriller Sacrifice.
Fans Express Their Frustration
Detroiters fans have voiced their outrage, especially since there were high hopes that the show would break into Netflix’s Top 10 and possibly prompt a third season.
On X/Twitter, one user commented, “Congratulations Netflix, YOU are the chump of the week #detroiters.”
“ITYSL community, grab your pitchforks,” declared another user. “@NetflixIsAJoke shared last month that the Tim Robinson/Sam Richardson sitcom @Detroiters would be streaming starting today.

“Now, those announcements are erased, and Detroiters is nowhere to be found in @netflix search results. What gives??”
A third user stated, “Not only is Netflix not delivering Season 3 of Detroiters, they are also taking away seasons one and two.”
“If, in a week, we don’t see a Season 3 of Detroiters emerge and seasons one and two are not reinstated, I will hold a grudge against Netflix forever,” expressed a fourth user.
What Is the Series About?
Detroiters is a two-season comedy that aired on Comedy Central between 2017 and 2018. It follows the lives of best friends Sam Duvet and Tim Cramblin as they navigate their roles at a struggling advertising agency in Detroit.
The duo juggles their friendship, the quirks of their local culture, and the challenges of creating low-budget TV commercials for local businesses, having taken over the agency following Tim’s father’s retirement.
Robinson and Richardson serve not only as co-creators but also star as Tim and Sam, respectively. Despite its inability to garner the ratings needed for a third season, it has gained a dedicated cult following.
Both seasons were well-received, with Season 1 scoring 90% among critics and 81% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, while Season 2 achieved an impressive 100% and 92% respectively.
With its unique humor, clever writing, and the strong chemistry between Robinson and Richardson, along with their roots in Detroit, this show is definitely a must-watch for binge enthusiasts.
Where Can You Watch It Now?
Fortunately, all hope is not lost. While Detroiters might not be available on Netflix at present, you can find both seasons on Paramount Plus.
Alternately, if you’re not keen on adding another subscription, the show can also be purchased on various on-demand platforms, including Amazon Prime Video.
