How to Use the iPhone’s Clean Energy Charging Mode

With iOS 16.1, Apple launched the Clean Energy Charging Mode for iPhones, with the goal of bringing about an ecological revolution. To lessen your carbon impact, enable this setting on your smartphone.

Clean Energy Charging does not operate continuously; it is engaged only when lower-carbon-emission electricity is available in the region’s energy system. The following section of the article describes the benefits of renewable energy-based charging for iPhones and how to use it for people who want to support Apple’s great aim.

What exactly is Clean Energy Charging Mode, and how does it work on an iPhone?

According to Apple, when you activate the Clean Energy Charging Mode on your iPhone and attach it to a charger, the smartphone obtains estimates of carbon emissions in your regional energy system. Using the forecasts it receives, your iPhone selectively charges when there’s a greener energy source available.

It should be noted that this charging mode is enabled by default and can be turned off. Go to Battery > Battery Health & Charging in the Settings app on your iPhone. Use the toggle here to enable or disable the Clean Energy Charging mode.

On your iPhone, you’ll also need to enable Location Services, System Customizations, and Significant Places. To do so, take the following steps:

  1. Open the Settings app and go to Privacy & Security > Location Services. Enable Location Services if not already.
  2. In the Settings app, go to Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services. Enable System Customization.
  3. In the Settings app, go to Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations. Turn on Significant Locations.

Last year, the seemingly innocuous environment-conscious charging option was unveiled. According to Apple, it is only operational during specific hours (especially at night when phones are usually put on charge for extended periods).

Based on the data, the feature is also taught to track people’s behavior (times when they use their phone, charging periods, and so on) and decide the optimal time to use clean energy for charging.

However, numerous users recently discovered the feature’s oddities, causing quite a commotion in the community. Furthermore, because it is enabled by default, most were unaware of its presence.

How to Disable Clean Energy Charging Mode

If you get a notification on the Lock Screen indicating when your iPhone will be fully charged and need the device to be fully charged sooner, tap on Charge Now. This will disable the Clean Energy Charging Mode and allow you to charge your phone normally.

Several members of the community have recently begun to assume that Apple developed the unusual charging mode with the intent of reducing charging speeds and efficiency for the advantage of the firm. Actually, it is a misconception: the Clean Energy Charging Mode has no goal of deliberately lowering charging efficiency.

However, you may notice that your device isn’t fully charged even after being plugged in for an extended period of time; the function may temporarily halt charging actions on your smartphone. In this instance, you can stop the feature or change the mode by selecting “Charge Now.”
