Every year, Apple hosts the Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC for short, and it will return in 2023. Here’s when it’ll take place, how to watch it, and what Apple may disclose.
When Will WWDC 2023 Be?
From June 5–9, 2023, WWDC 2023 will take place. On June 5, Apple will hold its main keynote presentation, where it always announces new software and (possibly) hardware. Apple hasn’t said when the keynote will start, but last year it was at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, which is 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
Like last year, most of WWDC will happen online, and the keynote will likely be another presentation that has already been made. But on June 5, Apple will host a special event at its Apple Park headquarters for a small group of people that will last all day.
How do I live stream WWDC?
If last year’s WWDC is any indication, the event should be on Apple’s YouTube channel and the Apple Events site. The livestream will probably also be available in the Apple Developer app for iPhone and iPad (you don’t have to be a registered developer to watch the stream) and the TV app on Apple TV.
It’s nice to have so many options, but the easiest way to watch the event is probably on YouTube.
What Will WWDC Have?
Apple isn’t saying what it will talk about at this year’s WWDC event, except that it will cover “the latest improvements to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.” Apple usually announces major software updates at WWDC, and they come out later in the fall. It’s almost certain that we’ll get our first look at iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, tvOS 17, and macOS 14 at the event.
There has also been talk that Apple might show off an augmented reality and/or virtual reality headset at WWDC. It’s been said that the project has been in the works for years, but it’s expected to come out this year. Apple might use WWDC to show it off for the first time. Bloomberg said in January that the device will have “several external cameras that can analyze a user’s hands” and “sensors within the gadget’s housing that can read eyes.” This will let the headset work as a standalone device, an external display for a Mac, or an advanced FaceTime system. According to the same report, the cost will be around $3,000.
There are rumors that Apple is working on a few new Mac computers, and any of them could show up at WWDC if Apple doesn’t announce them before June. Bloomberg says that Apple is working on two new iMac computers with code names J433 and J434. These computers will have a “new M-series chip” that will replace the M1 chip in the current iMac. The same source says that Apple is also working on a 15-inch MacBook Air and an update to the 13-inch MacBook Air, which got an update last year with an M2 chip.
A new Mac Pro could be the most interesting Mac that shows up at WWDC. The current Mac Pro is the last computer Apple makes that uses Intel processors instead of Apple Silicon chips, which are used in every other Mac now. The Mac Studio came out in 2022 as a stopgap machine. Apple said that a real Mac Pro powered by silicon would be coming soon. Bloomberg says that the machine will use an Apple M2 Ultra chip with up to 24 CPU cores, 76 GPU cores, and up to 196 GB of unified memory. Apple was said to be working on a “M2 Extreme” chip that would make the Pro different from the Mac Studio, but this may have been scrapped.
We do know that Apple probably won’t show off any new iPhones at WWDC. New iPhones are usually only shown at special events in August, September, or October. The iPhone 14 series was announced in September 2022, and it’s likely that the iPhone 15 will do the same.
