The 1989 cult classic, Road House, has been remade with Jake Gyllenhaal taking on the lead role instead of Patrick Swayze. Additionally, MMA fighter Conor McGregor has been added to the cast. Here is information on where to watch the movie and if it is available for streaming.
The original Road House featured Patrick Swayze as a bouncer who, despite his love for poetry and philosophy, is hired to restore order in a chaotic Honky Tonk bar known as the Double Deuce.
Wedged between the popular films Dirty Dancing and Ghost, the movie was an interesting blend of action and love, although it must be said that the actor had better chemistry with his onscreen mentor Sam Elliott than with his movie love interest Kelly Lynch.
Despite its strange mix, Road House achieved moderate success in theaters and became a huge hit on VHS. This has led to a remake directed by Doug Liman, with information on how to watch the new version provided below.
Is Road House available for streaming?
Road House will not be released in theaters, but it will be available for streaming on Prime Video starting on Thursday, March 21, 2024.
The film was shown in theaters at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin last week, giving a select few critics and fans the opportunity to view it on the large screen. However, the rest of the audience will be watching it on their televisions, much to the disappointment of director Doug Liman.
In an angry op-ed for Deadline in January, the director expressed disappointment in Amazon’s acquisition of MGM. Despite Amazon’s promise to invest a billion dollars into theatrical motion pictures and release at least 12 a year, the director stated that their actions towards his film Road House were the opposite of what was initially promised. This was especially frustrating as MGM was one of the few studios still producing major commercial films for theatrical release such as Bond and Creed.
Towards the end of the op-ed, Liman asserts that Amazon’s claims of supporting cinemas are deceptive. He points out that despite their public statements, Amazon’s true intentions are to exclusively stream Road House on their own platform, Amazon Prime. This decision to use the film to sell plumbing fixtures goes against their initial request for trust from Liman and the wider film community.
