Riot, the developers of League of Legends, have announced a significant set of modifications that will be implemented in the game’s ranked mode during Split 2. These changes consist of improvements to placement matches, demotion protection, and the option for Master+ players to queue up with a partner.
The upcoming Split 2 of League of Legends ranked is set to bring about significant changes, as the developers have announced a slew of updates for the mode. These updates will be implemented on May 15, 2024, marking the start of the new split.
The purpose of these adjustments is to tackle problems such as receiving negative LP gain. Therefore, the developers have raised the limit for players’ highest possible rank after completing their placements. The maximum placement has now been extended from Emerald I to Diamond III.
The developers are confident that this modification will enable players to reach their true ranking more quickly on their primary account than on a new one. This is intended to discourage players from buying new accounts to play on, and the developers have also announced their intentions to penalize those who do so.

In the upcoming Split 2 of the 2024 ranked season, there will be changes to demotions. The adjustment is to the Demotion Protection between divisions, which will now provide less chances to maintain one’s previous rank. Essentially, if a player’s LP drops below 0, the remaining LP will be subtracted from 100 in the lower division.
Despite the changes, tiers will continue to have demotion protection. In other words, if you are at Gold IV with 0 LP, you will still have some room to avoid losing your rank. However, this also means that there will be some adjustments. In the event of a demotion, your LP will automatically be set at 25, 50, or 75, depending on how far below your actual skill level you are.
The upcoming change for ranked in Split 2 of 2024 will be the re-introduction of duo queue in Masters+ rank. This feature was disabled in 2021, but Riot is confident in their ability to re-enable it. These changes will not apply to China and Korea.
