HYBE Artists Shine at the Billboard Music Awards: From BTS to ILLIT

2024 Billboard Music Awards Finalists Revealed

On November 25, the finalists for the 2024 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) were unveiled, highlighting the remarkable influence of HYBE artists in the global music scene.

BTS Jimin and Jungkook Lead Nominations

At the forefront of these nominations is BTS’s Jimin, who received accolades for both Top Global K-Pop Song and Top Global K-Pop Artist with his hit “Like Crazy,” the title track from his acclaimed solo album, “FACE.” The track made a significant impact, debuting at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and maintaining its presence for an impressive 17 weeks.

Jungkook, aiming for consecutive wins in the Top Global K-Pop Song category, also enters the spotlight with his solo single “3D” and the title track “Standing Next to You” from his album “GOLDEN,” both of which debuted at No. 5 on the Hot 100. Furthermore, Jungkook stands out with nominations in six categories, including Top Selling Song, Top K-Pop Album, Top Song Sales Artist, and Top Global K-Pop Artist—marking him as the most-nominated K-pop artist this year. Notably, he has made history as the first K-pop soloist nominated for Top Song Sales Artist.

BTS’s Historic Achievements at the BBMAs

BTS has a storied history with the Billboard Music Awards, taking home 12 trophies in total. Their accolades include five consecutive wins for Top Social Artist from 2017 to 2021, and they clinched the Top Duo/Group award in 2019, as well as 2021 and 2022. In 2023, Jungkook added to this legacy by winning the Top Global K-Pop Song award with his chart-topping track “Seven.”

SEVENTEEN and Other Nominees Shine Bright

SEVENTEEN received a nomination for Top K-Pop Touring Artist, a recognition of their phenomenal world tour, “FOLLOW,” which spanned nine cities and showcased 20 shows between July 2022 and January 2023. Their extensive concerts, including the arena-filling “FOLLOW AGAIN” events in Korea and Japan, further solidified their reputation as premier performers, topping Billboard’s mid-year Boxscore report for Top Tours in the K-pop category.

Similarly, TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) continues their upward trajectory with a nomination for Top K-Pop Album, following last year’s nominations for Top Global K-Pop Artist and Top K-Pop Album.

Rising Stars and Surprises in Nominations

ENHYPEN has secured nominations for both Top Global K-Pop Artist and Top K-Pop Touring Artist, while LE SSERAFIM made waves with a nomination for their first English digital single, “Perfect Night,” in the Top Global K-Pop Song category. Rookie group ILLIT, achieving momentum just eight months post-debut, is also nominated for Top Global K-Pop Song with their track “Magnetic.”

Noteworthy Absences: The Case of NewJeans

Despite the excitement surrounding the nominations, the absence of NewJeans raised eyebrows among fans and industry experts alike. Last year, they made history by being the first K-pop girl group to perform at the BBMAs merely six months after their debut. Although their songs “How Sweet,” “Bubblegum,” “Supernatural,” and “Right Now” found a place on the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts, their failure to chart on the Hot 100 or the Billboard 200 this year contributed to a surprising lack of nominations.
