HYBE Provides Update on Suga’s Absence from Scheduled Police Station Appearance, Resulting in Chaos at the Scene

Seoul Shinmun reported on August 21st that Suga is scheduled to appear for a police investigation on August 22nd. The police will be looking into the specifics of the drunk driving incident and determining if there was any attempt to minimize its severity.

According to reports from the media, Suga has been arranging his schedule in anticipation of his upcoming appearance before the police.

It is anticipated that he will not make a public appearance and will instead avoid the photo line.

Upon being questioned about this, the police responded by saying, “We are unable to deliberately establish a photo lineup. Our criteria for handling this situation will be consistent with how we handle other suspects.”

On August 6th, Suga was apprehended by the police in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul for riding an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol.

At the time, his blood alcohol concentration was said to be 0.227%, which was well above the legal limit for license revocation (0.08% or higher). This was considerably higher compared to the levels of Kim Sae-ron and Kwak Do-won, both of whom had been embroiled in drunk driving controversies before. Kim Sae-ron had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.2%, while Kwak Do-won’s was 0.158%.

According to the Automobile Management Act, electric scooters fall under the category of “motorized bicycles.”Furthermore, they are also recognized as vehicles under the Road Traffic Act, making it a criminal offense to operate them while under the influence.

Since September of last year, Suga has been fulfilling his military duty as a public service worker. It is anticipated that he will finish his service in June of 2025.

On August 12th, news emerged from Sports Kyunghyang that a complaint had been filed with the Seoul Regional Office of Military Manpower regarding Suga’s service as a public service worker. This report triggered a wave of backlash and criticism.

The complainant made a plea for a comprehensive inquiry into the management of the institution where Suga is employed, as well as his actions during his time there.

The controversy surrounding Big Hit Music and Suga’s previous “downplaying and false explanation”of the situation was brought up, with speculation that their privileged status may have played a role in the situation.

The individual who filed the complaint also expressed worries about Suga’s potential failure to fulfill his responsibilities and requested a comprehensive investigation.

They also requested for strict actions to be taken, such as reporting any unlawful actions to the appropriate investigative authorities.

The latest update reveals that BTS’s Suga (real name Min Yoon-gi), who was accused of drunk driving, was scheduled to attend his initial police questioning on August 22nd. However, this information was later clarified to be false, leading to confusion at the scene.

News quickly circulated that Suga was scheduled to make an appearance at the Seoul Yongsan Police Station on the morning of August 22nd to address his drunk driving charge. Reporters who arrived ahead of time at the location anticipated his arrival and efficiently positioned themselves to await his arrival.

Despite the initial plan to conduct this police investigation privately, news of Suga’s involvement was leaked the night before, resulting in a large number of reporters gathering at the scene early the next morning.

It was of utmost importance to see if Suga would make an appearance at the photo line. A statement had been made by a police official beforehand, declaring that Suga would be treated like any other suspect. However, considering the limited space at Yongsan Police Station, with no underground parking lot and a narrow entrance, it appeared certain that Suga would come face to face with the media.

Despite HYBE, Suga’s agency, announcing that “He is not appearing today”to the gathered journalists, the atmosphere quickly turned chaotic. While some reporters left immediately, others remained doubtful of HYBE’s statement, resulting in ongoing confusion and a bustling scene at the police station.
