Hyoyeon Urges Junior Idols to Show Respect: “Girls’ Generation Always Greets, Even Bowing 90 Degrees to Delivery Workers”

Highlights from Koyote’s Baekga on SBS Power FM’s “Cultwo Show”

On November 29, Koyote’s Baekga took center stage as a special DJ on SBS Power FM’s popular program, “Cultwo Show.”He was joined by notable guests, including Lee Jaewon from H.O.T. and Hyoyeon from Girls’ Generation, during an engaging segment titled “Don’t Do That!”

Memorable Moments: Hyoyeon Reminisces

During the lively discussion, Hyoyeon fondly recalled her trainee days, humorously stating, “Back when we were trainees, we always bowed 90 degrees to the people delivering food to us. You punks!” This playful remark revealed her nostalgia for the past and the rigorous culture of respect that characterized their early experiences in the industry.

A Regret Reflecting Tradition

As the conversation progressed, Hyoyeon reflected on the importance of greetings, declaring it her greatest regret. “If there’s one thing that’s disappointing, it’s greetings,” she expressed, acknowledging her traditional views on the matter. “Even I think I might be a bit old-fashioned about this,” she admitted.

Support for Upholding Greeting Etiquette

Baekga and fellow guest Kim Taegyun showed their support for Hyoyeon’s stance, stating that expecting proper greetings is not an outdated concept. They both emphasized the significance of courteous interactions in the industry.

The Changing Landscape of Artist Interactions

Lee Jaewon probed further, asking whether junior artists still take the initiative to greet their seniors at broadcasting stations. Hyoyeon responded with disappointment, saying, “These days, they don’t greet us at all.” Jaewon echoed her sentiment, sharing, “Last time, some didn’t greet me either…”

Adding to the conversation, Baekga described his own experience during album promotions, where the act of greetings seems to have diminished. He noted, “It feels awkward when they line up as a group. Nowadays, we don’t know who’s who, and suddenly someone enters saying, ‘Who are you?’ only to find out they’re a PD (producer). Back then, we lined up to greet, but now the PDs come to thank us instead. It feels strange.”

The Decline of Greeting Culture in the Industry

Hyoyeon elaborated on her own approach, stating, “I also don’t like receiving greetings, so I don’t let them come to me. However, when passing by in the hallway, I feel at least a nod or eye contact should happen.” She lamented, “Nowadays, they don’t even make eye contact, so they don’t greet at all.”

This sentiment echoes the feelings of others in the industry, including Oh My Girl’s Seunghee, who recently shared her own regrets about the fading senior-junior greeting culture. She highlighted, “The tradition of greeting everyone in the waiting rooms has disappeared. Now, people just exchange eye contact in the hallways.”
