Hyun Bin Discusses His Commitment to Action Scenes in “Harbin”

On January 13, acclaimed actor Hyun Bin joined director Woo Min-ho on MBC FM4U’s “Perfect Day with Lee Sang-soon” to promote their latest film, “Harbin.”During the show, Hyun Bin shared insights into his approach to performing action sequences without the safety net of a stunt double.

The Importance of Authenticity in Action

When questioned about his choice to perform dangerous scenes himself, Hyun Bin stated, “This allows the camera to capture the actor more closely. If a double is used, it’s difficult to convey the actor’s face and expressions.” His commitment to authenticity was evident as he emphasized the importance of visually portraying the intense emotions and struggles experienced by his character.

He candidly recalled, “In our movie, it was crucial to capture the desperate struggles on camera, so I opted to perform them myself.”However, this dedication came at a cost; Hyun Bin mentioned suffering a back injury during a scene that required him to lift and throw another character. “I think I overstrained myself,” he admitted, highlighting the physical toll of his commitment to the role.

Challenges Faced During Filming

In another segment of the interview, Lee Sang-soon, who screened the film with his wife Lee Hyo-ri, commented on the film’s frequent smoking scenes and inquired about how it affected the actors. Hyun Bin clarified, “Some actors smoked real cigarettes, but I used nicorettes.” This not only speaks to the effort to maintain character realism but also emphasizes health-conscious decisions made on set.
