The series of ongoing public attacks against Taylor Swift initiated by Trump began after she encouraged Americans to vote for Kamala Harris on her Instagram account. The pop icon views Ms. Harris as a strong advocate for rights and meaningful causes.
In a span of just five days, Trump relentlessly targeted Taylor Swift.
Shortly after Taylor announced her support for Harris, Trump suggested that the “Fortnite” hitmaker might face repercussions for backing the Democratic Party and opposing him.
By September 13, Trump had released a parody version of the T-shirt associated with Taylor Swift’s worldwide The Eras Tour as part of his campaign merchandise. The design mirrored the original’s layout, colors, and fonts, but featured Trump’s photo instead of Taylor’s along with altered text.
Fans of Taylor Swift expressed outrage at this apparent copyright infringement, denouncing Trump for targeting a young woman due to her political stance, irrespective of his age.
Trump’s actions have also drawn criticism from several individuals, including Scooter Braun, the music producer who previously had a conflict with the “Country Music Princess.” On September 15, Braun shared a screenshot of Trump’s remark on his Instagram Story, captioned: “Stop it, Donald.”
In 2019, Scooter Braun acquired Big Machine Records, the label that Taylor Swift was associated with, for $300 million. This deal granted Braun the rights to the master recordings of Taylor’s music from 2006 to 2017.
At that time, Taylor expressed her disappointment on Tumblr, stating that her original recordings had been sold to Braun. She noted, “Scooter has stripped away the lifetime of work I put into my music, which I didn’t have the opportunity to buy back. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to be in the hands of someone who tried to destroy it,”
On February 11, during the ongoing dispute between Braun and Taylor, Trump publicly criticized the singer on Truth Social, claiming she was ungrateful. He highlighted that during his presidency (2017-2021), he endorsed the Music Modernization Act, which was designed to support Taylor’s career and other artists.
In response to this, Taylor has embarked on re-recording her first six studio albums to diminish the value of the older recordings now owned by Braun. This strategic move allows her to reclaim ownership of her lyrics, vocals, and albums, now titled with the suffix “Taylor’s Version.”
This situation has made Trump perplexed as to why Taylor would support Biden instead of remaining loyal to him.
Taylor Swift has refrained from commenting on Trump’s criticisms. On September 15, she was seen smiling and cheering for her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, during the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Some analysts speculate that Trump may feel threatened by Taylor Swift’s immense popularity and influence. Her lack of support for the real estate mogul could potentially impact his voter base significantly, especially given the sizable Swiftie community. A spokesperson from the U.S. General Services Administration revealed to CNBC that Taylor Swift’s Instagram post endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris led to at least 337,826 visits to Vote.gov, the U.S. government’s site that offers tailored voting information for each state.
