ILLIT Celebrates Best New Female Artist Award at MAMA 2024
On November 22, ILLIT basked in the glory of winning the Best New Female Artist award at the MAMA Awards in Los Angeles, USA. This prestigious recognition marks a significant milestone in their burgeoning career.
Overwhelmed with emotion, the members of ILLIT shared their heartfelt sentiments on stage. Yuna, one of the group members, expressed, “Performing at the MAMA Awards has always been a dream for us, one we’ve diligently pursued since our trainee days. This rookie award makes us incredibly grateful.”
Reflecting on their journey, she mentioned the struggles they faced as trainees, stating, “To my fellow members, I want to acknowledge the hard work you’ve all put in. We owe this achievement to our dedicated fandom, GLLIT, without whom this honor would not have been possible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
A Future Bright with Promise
Yuna further promised fans, “We aspire to be ILLIT, a group that continues to shine alongside GLLIT for many more years to come. Expect to see increasingly unique performances and expressions from us.” This statement reinforces their commitment to authenticity and creativity in their future endeavors.
Addressing Controversy
The group’s impactful debut in March with their single “Magnetic”was notable for making history as the first K-pop debut track to chart on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Singles Chart Top 100. However, their journey has not been without challenges.
They faced accusations from Min Hee-jin, the former CEO of ADOR and producer of NewJeans, alleging that ILLIT’s work plagiarized concepts from NewJeans. In light of these allegations, Belift Lab, ILLIT’s agency, has mounted a robust defense, releasing various media explanations, including video evidence that it claims debunks the accusations.
In a significant development, on the same day of the award ceremony, Min Hee-jin filed a defamation complaint against Kim Tae-ho, Belift Lab’s CEO, and Vice President Choi Yoon-hyuk at the Yongsan Police Station. She also disclosed plans to pursue a lawsuit demanding 5 billion KRW in damages against the agency, escalating the ongoing conflict.
