Apex Legends professional player Philip ‘ImperialHal’ Dosen has detailed a strategic plan to restore the popular battle royale to its former prominence. The game has seen a notable decline in its player base, particularly on Steam, where the numbers have consistently dwindled in recent months.
The community appears increasingly disenchanted with Apex Legends in 2024. While players debate the reasons behind this rapid decline, factors cited include fierce competition from other titles, dissatisfaction with the ranked play system, and concerns over the developers’ focus on cosmetic content rather than gameplay improvements.
ImperialHal’s Three-Point Strategy for Apex Legends
ImperialHal’s plan comprises three key recommendations aimed at enhancing gameplay:
- Revising the Ranked System: Hal emphasizes the importance of the ranked system, suggesting that Respawn had successfully refined it in previous seasons. He advocates for a return to the ranked format introduced during Season 13, known as “Ranked Reloaded.” This version emphasized teamwork and victory as primary objectives while ensuring that Ranked Points (RP) more accurately reflected players’ true skills.
-
Revitalizing Horizon: The second element of his proposal calls for a revival of the character Horizon, particularly her abilities as they were during her initial introduction in Season 7. ImperialHal believes this would help regain the balance and excitement that players enjoyed when she was first added to the roster.
Give me back Season 13 Ranked Prime Horizon 0.4 Aim assist I’d make Apex great again

Adjusting Aim Assist: Lastly, Hal proposes reverting the controller aim assist values to 0.4. Aim assist underwent a reduction in Season 22, adversely impacting controller players, particularly in crossplay lobbies on PC. Many were taken aback by Hal’s recommendation to increase aim assist, yet he justified this by expressing that desperate times call for drastic measures. He noted that the current levels are significantly lower compared to competitive alternatives, despite the fact that controller players constitute a significant portion of the player demographic.
I agree 100% the minute changes over time to Apex has hurt it massively which led to other big games to take over slowly

Hal’s insights highlight that even minimal adjustments can significantly influence player retention and engagement, contributing to the shift toward competing titles.
As we move into 2025, Respawn faces considerable challenges in regaining its lost player base. The peak player count on Steam saw an impressive 470,000 in February, yet this number plunged to under 150,000 by December.
